Panama is not exactly teeming with actors (Ruben Blades, who's too old for the part, is the only one that comes to mind) so that casting a Panamanian actor would be a bit of a stretch. Panama has an abundance of many things, actors are not one of them. Fighters, on the other hand...

They can always go the open cast route or even try out local boxers who can try to play the part. Antonio Tarver had no formal acting trainning and got the final Rocky gig. However, Duran is such an icon that perhaps it is too risky to try a novice.

I am just surprised they made the film as latino subect characters are not a common hollywood production. A film on Che was expected, but that filmed mainly in Spain.

Matthew Saad Muhammad's story is the best there is....especially when you think about the kind of fighter he became.

Oliver McCall - His claim to fame was his TKO of Lennox Lewis in '94 for the WBC title and then his subsequent meltdown in the rematch several years later. He's also battled with drugs and alcohol but he's still around and fighting.

His debut was in 1985 and by-God, he's still fighting at 47 (he'll be 48 later this month). He's fought a couple HOF'rs and numerous name opponents through many hw eras.

I'd like to hear his life's story - a movie about him wouldn't be blockbuster film like Ali or Raging Bull but I could see it as being an indie film.

I always wanted to see the fights between Tunney and Greb. Furthermore **** Tiger vs Frank DePaula, Roland LaStarza vs Rocky Marciano I and Sam Langford and Charley Burley fights.

EDIT: I just realised this thread is about boxing movies...

I'm with you there. It's far better to cast an actor who bears no physical resemblace to a real-life character, but can act, than to cast a dead ringer who can't. If Bernal can pull-off the feat of becoming Duran, this whole discussion would be deemed mute.

His (and everyone else's) filmography is available right here. Just enter Gael Garcia Bernal in the search field.

As for Usher playing Sugar Ray, he bears a rather striking physical resemblace. I've never seen him act before, nor do I know that he has. However, as soon as I'm done here, I'll check the link a provided above.
