This. But light heavy wasn't his best weight. I think Andre Ward would be a tough one too.

At Light-Heavy Ezzard Charles for sure. Michael Spinks, Bob Foster, Archie Moore, and Gene Tunney I'd favor but I give Jones better chances against them then I would give him against Charles.

I dont know enough about fighters before 2000 to say who could beat him, but I can give my thoughts on what is needed to beat him.

Hopkins won 4 rounds and I thought Tarver won their first fight. A decade apart but in both fights Roy struggled on the ropes. Roy doest like being on the ropes and isnt that good on the inside. In the hopkins fight its like hopkins knew what he wanted to do but just couldnt over come Roy's fast movement, he just couldnt land enough to win rounds.

You want someone who is fast and does well on the inside, Id say SRR has those qualities. Hearns would be able to win in a pure boxing match if it was olympic style or something but I would bet on a Roy KO in an actual pro match at 160.

I think it is worth mentioning that virtually every boxing site I know venerates "a prime Roy Jones" the same as people do here. I mean Jones is the epiteme of the fighter with natural ability. As some of the older guys point out though perhaps a real dye in the wool fighter could have beaten Jones....interesting! we actually do have some data on that.

JOnes beat up Toney and what I have heard people do is try to minimize James T. In a word? No. Toney is one of the best and a throwback to the guys who could do it all. James Toney on his fatest day could go fifteen rounds. The man threw as many punches as a prime in shape Rahman in their fight! Jones was just too fast and slippery for Toney.

Jones also, like Mayweather early on beat up on some of the best....Mccallum, a guy named Hopkins haha, etc. Yeah Jones got to some of these guys early but he did fight the right comp at one point in his career.

I think Jones chin could have been tapped...he was knocked down by devalle for example, it was a flash but...a guy like Hearns may have found him. At 160ish i think Jones reigns supreme.....Problem is that punchers tend to fight up from that division, if you can knock em out at 168 you fight cruiser and light heavy....All the fabulous light heavies have been mentioned with one exception and In think it is a big one.

How about Michael Moore? He tends to get short shift next to Foster and Spinks but he was imo every bit as good as a light heavy and down. Could he have fought Jones at 168 and challenged? hard to say. Moore was a fighters fighter though, he had a lot of talent and knew how to use angles to beat speed.

As far as the older guys Jones would not have fared so well because those guys were very complete fighters and would have not hung out to be hit. Examples? Look at how Glen Johnson, another throw back fighter, manages to tire Jones out....its later in Jones career but its quite telling. Ironickly I think the Tarver punch was a fluke but the Johnson victory was a blueprint: NOBODY would have caught a prime Jones at 168 like Tarver did! however, just as Ray Robinson, a guy who had the athletacism of Jones and a whole lot more....lost a few times to the grinders...guys like LaMotta, JOnes could have been vulnerable to a guy who could avoid his potshots outside and fights him inside, like Johnson did....On that account its possible that even Aundrey Ward might have given him trouble...Though I don't know if even Ward has the footspeed to close the gap on a prime Jones. I tend to think with Jones he had to be walked down like Johnson did.

Surely Andre ward at 168 would be favoured over jones.....I'd see ward takin jones out of his rhythm straight away and grinding a ud over a frustrated jones
