If you took the Tyson that beat holmes versus the holmes of 1980. Tyson would still win. It would have been a lot tougher as mike said. But he would still have won. Tyson was phenonominal for a short period, Holmes was very good for a long period.

Someone please show me the point during Holmes' prime when he wasn't getting caught with and hurt by overhand rights?

here's the thing
holmes may have even been past his own prime by 1980 but he was still near it enough
Tyson was past his best when he fought douglas. the damato style is a very precise one n u absolutely have to drill in drill n drill to b sharp and execute it automatically. any hesitation n that style will leave u very vulnerable so once Tyson leaves rooney and the asslickers come in to run camp, Tyson is immediately less than he was at his prime.
so here's the rest of the thing, 12 or 15 don't matter, the same one of two things happen. holmes was always hittable but his jab was better than anything Tyson ever dealt with so if Tyson was to land a bomb or two on holmes, larry would get up. Tyson is a more precise puncher than anyone holmes fought so Tyson would come in to finish and maybe drop holmes agin and maybe again but holmes would keep getting up. heres the gray area, 3knockdown rule in effect maybe Tyson stops him. a ref that gets nervous easy, maybe rsf. but if not, n if the fight goes past 5 rounds, holmes picks Tyson apart winning all of the last 7 or 10 rounds while Tyson might have won 3 of the first 5. imo, holmes on points nine rounds to three with the score close because of a knockdown or two or even 4

I wouldn't have said Holmes was even slightly post prime in 1980. For me his best performance might have been the Cooney fight in 82. His speed, footwork, combinations and accuracy only seemed to show the smallest impairment in perhaps 84 around the Bonecrusher fight.

I think about the best I ever seen of holmes was his first fight v shavers. he was flawless, shavers hardly touched him while he painted shaves silly. not hard or destructive but damn he shut shavers down n as the years went by and holmes career unfolded, I begun to realize he was ready for the title years befor he got his shot. while ali was going life n death with Norton young n shavers holmes was really an uncrowned champ. the Norton fight was only competitive bcuz, we found out later, something was wrong with the elbow or bicep on his left hand. in other words the best thing about holmes, his jab was impaired so he had to just gut it out with Norton. never da less, history now has it that Tyson was just some kinda myth that had scared everyone bfor they fought but if u seen him fight back then, u know dam well that he was crazy quick sharp n powerful. holmes never fought anyone like Tyson until well until he fought Tyson n was well past his prime so I stand by my speculative opinion of what woulda happened if these two heavy weight legends woulda met at their primes

I agree that the first Shavers fight was a thing of beauty. I'm not sure if there is a really good copy on You Tube. My DVD copy at home is a little grainy.........but it really is one of the best displays of elusive boxing. Holmes vs Tyson prime for prime is a very interesting fight.
