There are some boxers I hate as people:

    Jo-El Scott
    Tony Ayala
    James Butler

Those guys deserve to be hated.

Most fighters that I dislike I just dislike, I don't HATE them.

Ok, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt on Marciano then and take back what I said earlier in the thread, although I do wish you'd look into the whole Marciano/Johansson thing a little bit more and quit with the assumptions. If you were to do so, you should find out that Marciano didn't think much of Johansson as a person and he wasn't the only one of the two who wanted the fight. Marciano did not like Johansson, who was the total opposite of what Rocky was...Ingemar had a very ****y & arrogant attitude and was totally lackadaisical in training ("Johansson led a playboy existence even when training for major fights, and it was the norm for him to go nightclubbing & dancing into the early hours during the build-ups for title fights."). Johansson was the total opposite of what Marciano, as Rocky was the relatively quiet & humble type, whose dedication and the amount of time put into training for his fights was about as much as any fighter in history, if not more-so. You had Marciano's dislike for Johansson, the fact that both wanted it (Johannson tried to get out of the rematch clause with Patterson), and also the patriotic part of it...Marciano wanted to bring the title home to the USA.

great post yogi, i never knew ingo wanted the fight that badly, and i never knew there was so much heat between the two.

who would u favor in this matchup in 1960? 37 year old marciano coming off a 5 year layoff?

I guess I'd have to favour Johansson just because of Marciano's age and inactivity, but it's tough to say because we don't know how good Marciano would've been at that point...It's not like Marciano was one to rely on his reflexes and such, so maybe that layoff wouldn't hurt him as much as layoffs normally do other fighters. But that is still going to hurt him to some extent, though, and coupled that with his age...yeah, Johansson probably would've taken that fight had it happened in 1960.

You must look at every fighter as a product of those times. What we look upon as racist talk today was common back in Jeffries day. Newspaper writers would use horribly racist language regarding Johnson.

The unwritten rule in those days was no heavyweight champion would ever give any black man the chance to win the title. Why? The worlds heavyweight champion was considered the master of all men physically. Think of the social and cultural ramifications should a black man, a supposedly inferior race, would win this title.

It is no coincidence that a non American, Burns, gave Johnson a title shot. Burns was a Canadian and as such did not feel bound by any American cultural tradition. Burns wrote that he was warned not to fight Johnson. Also it was probably no accident that this bout took place in Australia. Highly doubtful any American promoter would have touch it with a ten foot pole.

Once Johnson lost to Willard the color line was once again firmly in place. No chance whatsoever any black man would ever get a crack at the title. It took another 20 plus years. Those that ran boxing as well as those who ran this country made sure fighters like Wills never got their shot.

              - -Yup, they tried Dempsey for draft dodging that American joke of WWI in spite of Dempsey having been granted a draft exemption.

That asinine flag waving left baseball great Christy Matthewson gassed and weakened, Grover Cleveland Alexander shell shocked, half deaf, epileptic, and alcoholic, and my grandfather gassed and weakened. All beget the tragedy of shortened lives of misery.

Jack ditched Rickard and Kearns for Hollywood where he finally made some $ while taking Big Bill Tate with him as a sparring partner in anticipation of the Wills fight.

Be clear though, no state wanted to be the one sparking nationwide riots and death as happened post Jeffries Johnson.

              Politicians!

                Hating fighters...

Well, this is a passionate, blood & guts sport, and too often fighters built their reputation on being hateful. Not just disliking their opponent, but wanting to eat their children.

Tyson and Duran were two people that I doubt many broadcasters wanted to interview after a fight. Even if they won, they could be foul and obnoxious.

You could say that some fighters needed the adrenaline boost that "hate" provides, and that fans shouldn't take it so seriously, but they're just reacting to the bad vibes that they get from Broner, Hagler, Holmes, Amir, ...whoever.

Seems a lot of people go to a boxing match just to get drunk and shake their demons by rooting for blood to flow. Maybe some of them do change their ways when they see the object of their hatred being carried off on a stretcher.

Just in general now, in life people have this “crabs in a bucket” mentality. They can’t give people credit or be happy for them. It’s the same way in boxing. If you aren’t ready for hate you aren’t ready for success, and when you’re the best? You get hated on the MOST!

I’m sure you guys see this just in everyday life. People are always trying to bring down other people because they can’t take you being better than them. For me I’ve never been like that there’s enough money, success and things out there for everyone.

As for the boxing game I may not be a fan of certain fighters but I respect anyone that gets in the ring for a living because it’s extremely dangerous and you are never as good after as you were before. People in general though lack the ability to put themselves in someone else’s shoes. They don’t understand what these fighters go through which is a whole lot.

Yeah, what is it they like to say now, haters gonna hate? Strange thing is, if you're really successful and you get that kind of resentment and jealousy from friends and family. Like that comedian Gary Gulman who said instead of congratulations, his ***ish mother often says "MUST BE NICE, must be nice" or "OH FANCY" lol. Steve Shirripa likes tipping his mom so she doesn't complain as much. Maybe that would help. Or giving people inheritances or donations, if you're rich enough. Otherwise, don't be mad because I did better in school or worked hard to grow a business or even got lucky.

Real patriots like the Fighting Marine Gene Tunney voluntarily enlisted to help their country during WWI.

Smarten up and don't excuse those who shirked their duty.
