yeah but at the end of the day they still had to fight. And Hagler couldn't beat him. He was silly coming out southpaw basically gave the first four rounds away. Hagler didn't take the fight seriously. leonard did!

I doubt anyone would disagree it was a very close fight.

I had Leonard by a point. It was close enough that if someone had it a point the other way I wouldn't quibble over it.

He gave away too many rounds early and didn't show enough intensity later on (I blame his corner, even Gil Clancy said they were talking to him between rounds like it was an 'IBM meeting', not a fight which was very close).

Plus, Hagler simply wasn't as good as he was two years previously. He looked slow, his reactions were poor, his accuracy wasn't great and his gameplan was unfathomable.

If Leonard had come back in 1985 I think we'd have seen a better fight from Hagler, almost certainly one that he'd have won.

Leonard caught him at the right time.
honestly you are one of my favorite posters but I disagree on what you are saying. It's easy to score the fight in Haglers favor, if you turn off the commentary. Hagler didn't do much in the early rounds, but people forget that SRL did next to nothing either. I gave him the first round I remember, but I scored 7 rounds for Hagler. Not only that, but Hagler was champ for how long? you can't take his title away like SRL did, that was robbery. Just because Leonard survived doesn't mean he wins, which seemed to be the case.

I have always thought Hagler but have no issue with anybody saying Ray since Hagler gave away the first three rounds fighting in an orthodox stance. wtf?

Leonard, but I'll admit i'm biased. He's one of my all time favorites.
My brother scored it for Hagler though

i thought Leonard won pretty clearly, especially because Hagler gave away the first 5 or 6 rounds

As a Hagler fan, I rooted and wanted him to win but I don't think he did enough to win that fight. He gave away the first 4 rounds at least, which means he has 8 rounds to catch up for at least a draw. Still, Leonard displayed more boxing skills. He stayed active and landed cleaner. Had nicer ring general ship. I think Hagler didn't cut off the ring well enough, sort of just walked him down. Hagler should have boxed a lot more. Not that Hagler isn't a boxer at all but I'm saying make some adjustments.

This argument is entirely without merit. Nowhere in the rules of boxing is it written that a challenger has to decisively beat the champion by a large margin. Nor is it written that the champion should get the benefit of the doubt in any close rounds.

Turning off the commentary? The commentary has no influence over how I score a fight.

In any event, I have it 115-113 Leonard. Certainly a close fight and nowhere near a robbery.

And for the record, Hagler's camp vetoed one of the original judges for the fight. The replacement was JoJo Guerrero, who had Leonard winning 10-2.
