I see it the other way around.

Vitali was winning the fight in my opinion, and seemed to me to be building momentum. If he quit, it must have been because he was really freaking hurt.

When a fighter quits when he's getting beat, it just seems to go against everything I believe about athletics: No matter how bad things are, you fight on... the exceptions are (A) when you're suffering from an extremely debilitating injury, or (B) when you're risking severe damage by continuing.

In a sport like boxing, continuing to fight when you're getting pummeled like Dawson was is perhaps admirable, but it's also extremely dangerous. Nobody should fight to the death in a boxing ring.

On the other hand, quitting because someone is simply out-boxing you, as opposed to really hurting you, is not worthy of respect.

The following are a couple of little known (or mentioned) facts:
      1. To this day, Angelo Dundee remains an unsung hero for giving (the then) Cassius Clay the proverbial kick in the pants in Ali vs Liston I. After being "blinded" by some foreign substance or liniment of sorts off Liston's glove, the young Cassius wanted to quit right then and there, but Angelo pushed him off the stool and said "get on your bicycle" or words to that effect. He survided the round by keeping Sonny and bay with his left hand and the rest, as they say, is history.
      2. Duran never actually uttered the infamous words "No Mas." It was Howard Cosell in his interpretation of what was unfolding in the ring. What Duran actually said was "Ya no quiero pelear con éste payaso" (I no longer want to fight this clown). Had Duran been French or Italian, Cosell might have uttered the equivalent in either language.

McClellan quitting vs Benn was pretty shocking, even though we now know he should of quit much earlier.

I agree quitting if you're getting beaten is lame but if you're getting beaten and hurt at the same time then there's no problem.

I think it should be in a fighters spirit to fight through injury when close to winning or in a winnable bout.

The fact that Duran quit and shows no remorse is the worst. Nothing even comes close. He even said once that he quit because he thought he could get a rematch straight after....wtf?

Other than that, Alexander's quitting against Bradley was an embarrassment to the sport. It wasn't even a tough fight, both guys just kept running into each other. It was an atrocious advert for the sport. And Alexander quit because of a tincy little cut after a none too gruelling few rounds.

I've also heard it said that referee Octavio Mehran also said No Mas after Duran started to quit, letting people know the fight was over. He was also the ref for Tyson-Douglas.

Man, if that's the biggest dive you've ever seen, you need to watch some more. The first punch didn't go over his head. It hit him right on the top of the head and bounced off. It's possible it did scramble his brain a little though it didn't look hard enough to do that....The second hook also hit him pretty well.

Duran-SRL has to be the biggest.

That's probably were Cosell got it from.
