I remember Roy got smacked by a massive wide left hook from Griffin in the first match which I thought should have dazed Roy, he didn't even feel it. That was just the best punch as well, he got pretty consistently hit that night and I'm still amazed by Griffin's performance.

sugarj he didn't have to quit he fought hand picked guys and none of them were gonna step to him and fight. He fought Evander in his prime he wasn't 38 yrs old and Evander certainly had more wear and tear on him than Tyson did.
Buster Douglas ALWAYS had talent he just never focused on the deed and actually tained like a dog!! Theres to many excusses for Mike, he knew what he was doing all the time and at that time he wanted out and Buster abliged him. Tyson hurt Buster early in the fight and couldn't finish him thats when the fight was over. Buster weathered the storm very well because he was in better condition then Mike. Thats another reason Roy is a superior talent over Tyson, genetics! Ray

Your wrong here Ray, Tony Tucker and Michael Spinks had unbeaten records before meeting Tyson, sterling amateur careers too. Many were picking Spinks to win that fight too!
Tyson didn't handpick, he just fought the belt holders at the time.....you can't blame a guy for that.
He pretty much met every half decent 80s fighter barring Witherspoon (who blew his chance when he lost to Bonecrusher). The state of the division was not Tyson's fault.
As for the Holyfield fights.....come on, that wasn't prime Tyson! He'd been incarcerated for several years and was still rusty. eight rounds of action since 1991 (with McNeely, Mathis Jnr, Bruno and Seldon) was no way to prepare for Holyfield. Holyfield simply prepared harder, was more ring sharp and had the better gameplan. Age and wear and tear had nothing to do with it. Who had the more wear and tear when they met Ali or Foreman? Preparation and gameplan are key!
As for Buster Douglas, I can't take anything away from the guy; he was superb that night......but Tyson showed heart, took a sustained beating, didn't try to foul out and nearly bagged a knockout in round 8. Your mistaken Tyson did not hurt him early, it was after 8 rounds of being outboxed.

Spinks to win? Really? Who picked him Leon? The belt holders were NOT the quality fighters that you build a "legend" off of.
Why make excusses for his prep facing Evander? He knew what was in front of him and he wasn't confident because he knew it was time to face a guy that wasn't gonna circle or run. We knew Evander was gonna stand his ground and look to be first and counter and back Mike up. Tyson knew what was coming and he couldn't buffalo Evander because Evander is one of the tuffest fighters EVER! Tyson was NOT! Tyson hurt Buster early you can find it maybe in the 5th round or so, I don't remember which. Once Mike threw his best and nothing happened he didn't have the skills to contend with someone who constantly wanted to back him up. The fights he went the didtance in there wasn't the constant pressure applied to be able to dominant.
He got lucky with who was there at the time, plus his style was going to put him over because other than Frazier theres hasn't been a successful heavy who fought in a pressure style like Mike since Rocky.
I understand the generation that Tyson fought in thinking he's a great fighter but he wasn't he fought exciting fights early against easy competition. He generated excitment even when he made a fool of himself at press confrences but the press ate it up and the all time leach Don King racked it.
Sorrow but this guy was a 4 round fighter, he had good punches was very fast with his feet positioning and hands. Had a great fight plan (ala Cus) but he also fought in the most difficult style to fight in as you get older. We saw it with Paterson and Jose' too when you can't maintain the weaving and step at the same time you begin to stand and when that happens they were done.
They never learned laterial movemments and all of them were in love with their hooks and forgot their jabs in key situations. Thats the way I see and I was there! Ray

Tysons overall opponents were better than Roys. Razor Ruddock, Tony Tucker, Tubbs, Pinklon, Bonecrusher, and Spinks were no jokes. Roy ducked Dariusz Michalczewski and hand picked most of his opponents. Tyson ducked no one and fought all comers.
Only Tyson haters would claim that he was in his prime against Holyfield ... post prison Tyson was a much different fighter whose skills deeply deteriorated. He stopped throwing combos, became a head hunter and neglected going to the body, stopped moving his head and lost his overall speed. He wasn't effectively using the style that was tailor made for him and looked more for one hit KOs. The only thing that really remained was his power and he looked to be physically stronger overall due to him incorporating weight lifting into his training regimen.
A roided Holyfield headbutted his way to a win over declining Mike. Holyfield didn't have a time period like Mike when he was inactive completely.
And that last line is laughable. Tyson had more natural talent than Roy. Roy only had speed and reflexes ... Tyson had speed, reflexes, power, footwork etc. Tyson was 200 pounds at age 15, so much for "genetics."

Sometimes the answers to these questions become "who do you like more".
Sometimes we could just make the thread "Tyson or Jones" without a question and let people go at it.
Everybody has the right to their own opinion, it is my opinion Jones Jr. was more dominant, especially at middle and super middle.

Mike usually beat guys much bigger than him in brutal fashion. And Roy was something to see in his prime to. I like the punching power of Tyson, could knockout anyone with any punch.
