He was very good though. Technically skilled, well rounded, good pressure and one of the best body punchers of his era.
Check out the Stracey fight for a clinic on brutal body shots.Last edited by BennyST; 07-18-2012, 01:06 AM.

I think he came at a great time to be honest. As good as he was, I don't necessarily see him becoming a welterweight champion in many eras. He came right after Jose Napoles, but before the likes of Duran, Benitez and Leonard. Stracey was one of the easier champions to take the title from.
A win over Cuevas would've established him as the best welterweight of the late 70's era, but for whatever reason the bout never took place which takes away from the legacies of both men.
I do think he would've been a legitimate contender in any era due to his body punching ability and a cast-iron chin. I'd say that he redeemed himself with his spirited losing efforts against Duran and Benitez after fighting lesser opponents in title defenses.

Real good fighter. Excellent left hand, had a tendency to wave his right hand when throwing it to the head. Made 8 defenses, I think, and had two out and out wars with Armando muniz, who was real good himself.
