Modern fighters are always disregarded by old school romantics who only remember the highlights...and for the record just cause you fought more often dose'nt mean your a better fighter
The standard is there, and if Floyd can't match what the best ever did, then he shouldn't be in the conversation.

And please tell me you're not impling Floyd Mayweather ducked Joshua Clottey.
ducked is a very strong word. i consider it an outright duck when a fighter avoids the opponent that makes the most sense for him on the merits of the other fighters abilities. obviously that's not the case with floyd mayweather and josh clottey.
in a decent WW era floyd fought lighter touches and then made a brief retirement. the intention was to illustrate that.
the list which included clottey were contenders / belt holders.
on the punches, i could see floyd throwing less than 25 punches a round against marvin hagler. he's never been in the ring with a man like that, with that kind of size and pedigree, who could not only take his best shots but set him up with his own punches and take his head off.
what does he average fighting guys who arent marvin hagler?
i have not been counting.
and finally, when did i call floyd a great WW?
i was raising the point that marquez doesnt belong in the ring with a great WW and floyd couldnt stop him. a real WW with punching power and size would knock an old marquez out.
i'd pick him to take quite a few WW in history in a decision because he's frankly on another level in terms of his boxing from many of them, but he's hardly got a name on there worth a mention.

There's no denying Mayweather's extraordinary talents, but so many have done so much more than he has in the sport of boxing, so in response to 'How much more does he need to do?' My answer would have to be, ' Quite a bit.'
Irrespective of how he'd have done against the likes of Hearns, Leonard and Duran; his fighting resume thus far, just does'nt compare.
So imo, it's a bit early to start making wild aspersions..
Not fighting Pac is like Ali not fighting Frazier, and for him to have opted for Cotto instead is an insult to the lottery size cheque h'ell be taking home..
But because he only clocks in about once a year, i'll refrain from calling him greedy..

And, whether he averages 25 punches a round against Hagler or not is irrelevant. He doesn't average 25 punches a round and never has as far as I'm aware.
He averages 40 punches a round +.
As for Clottey, not even going to entertain it. Him being a belt holder or contender is as relevant as the guy who Malignaggi is fighting this weekend being a contender and belt holder.

how is it irrelevant when it was what i was talking about (mayweather jr getting blasted the hell out by marvin hagler or totally swamped on scorecards.)
i do not get what you are trying to accomplish.
clottey, williams, cotto, margarito, mosley, berto all made for an intresting WW division. all decent fighters. mostly around their primes. it was the hottest division in boxing. comparing those fights to a malinaggi fight against a nobody is not at all accurate. they're not even in the same ballpark. at one time or another williams, cotto, margarito, clottey were all considered to be very good fighters. what's happened in hindsight doest have any bearing on that. that's the way it was. that's why it was such a hot division.
and again, on floyd being a great welterweight (or not being a great welterweight
are you insinuating that by my post i was calling floyd mayweather a great welterweight?
he dominated every second of the marquez fight, and marquez did not belong in the ring with him, but that doesnt mean i'm calling him a great welterweight. a great welterweight would beat the trash out of marquez. floyd was barely breaking him down.
the orignal intent of my post was to compare him to ray leonard, a great fighter but one outside of the top 10Last edited by New England; 04-27-2012, 06:34 PM.
