I would say from his first fight to now, or whenever he decides to retire I would consider someone's era. Or at least during someone's prime. How would he be ranked during those years? Top 50 all-time doesn't sound too bad to me. Or how about his ranking in the weight classes he has fought in?

He will soon be approaching Calzaghe's 46-0 record. IMO he would already be there if he didnt take so much time off.

Do you think he would get any credit if he beats the 49-0 record or would people say it doesnt count because he isnt a heavyweight or that JCC jr already beat it (though with many low quality filler matches)
What people are forgetting here is that several people went past 49-0 before their first loss. No other heavyweight champion did that, or retired undefeated, though.

Julio Cesar Chavez was 87-0 before he got a "draw" with Pernell Whitaker. Willie Pep was 62-0 before he lost to Sammy Angott.

Even if he gets to 49-0, he's not really breaking any record, unless he's a heavyweight champ.

Don't think he will.He will be lucky if he beats Calzaghe's record.I doubt he will fight 4 or 5 times after Cotto either. As Floyd is arguably the top p4p guy right now he would need a good 4 or 5 years to get his 4 or 5 more fights with any credibility,As big fights take time to train for.Being on top,If he were to take filler fights he would get no credit for them.It would be like me asking for credit if I beat up a school kid.

I also think it is important to remember although Marciano's 49-0 LOOK'S very impressive,He had his fair share of filler

i don't think he fights often enough also like somebody else said the 49-0 is more of a heavyweight champ thing though 'breaking' that and retiring at like 50-0 or something especially considering the level of his competition would look pretty fecking awesome. I doubt if he's too concerned about it though.

I already know about Chavez and his story. Chavez had a lot of filler fights as well, a lot, to get to that number.

If he did get to 49-0 and retired undefeated then yes he would be breaking a record and "the curse" in terms of sports superstition, because nobody else has done that since Marciano.

                  Mayweather's record is pretty legitimate.

                  Castillo x2 (#1 LW, Lineal/WBC Champ)
                  Gatti (#1 JWW, WBC Champ)
                  Judah (#2 WW, IBF Champ)
                  Baldomir (#1 WW, Lineal/WBC Champ)
De La Hoya (#1 JMW, WBC Champ) [off Mayorga, 10oz gloves]
                  Hatton (UR, #8 P4P)
                  Marquez (UR, #2 P4P) [gave Pac hell 2 yrs afterwards @ 140+]
Mosley (#2 WW, #3 P4P, WBA Champ) [people demanded this, off Margo]
Ortiz (#2 WW, WBC Champ) [off career fight Berto]
                  Cotto (#1 JMW, WBA Champ

looks like 3 it is. He wants to retire at 37.

Yep, I also heard Floyd say this in an HBO interview.
