I was just curious being you either believe the punch that knocked down Sonny was legit or not... By chance, did they ever question Ali's other opponents to find out what they thought about it? I mean, if anyone could have any serious insight it would be someone who had went against him. I recall seeing Ali knock out Zora Folley with a similar right hand although it wasn't in the first round. Also, he was the only fighter to KO George Foreman who always had a granite chin. The man must have had decent punching power.

I've watched that punch over & over, over the years. I think Ali really did drop Liston with the punch, but if you watch Liston roll around & half-heartedly try to get up before flopping back over, I think it's obvious that Liston decided "What the heck....I'm already down. I can't match his speed. Why look clumsy for some more rounds & take his punches? I'll just roll over & wait till the ref says "10!" & then I'll get up."
Liston, one of my favorite heavyweights, had a better jaw then he showed that night.

It was a solid punch the Liston never saw. No doubt he was hurt and I don't think he would have won had it continued. But only the ref can count a fighter out and he has to wait until he gets the opponent to a neutral corner. The bottom line is Walcott never reached the count of ten and waived the fight off on the word of a spectator (Ring magazine editor Nat Fleischer) who had NOTHING to do with the fight, the state commission or the World sanctioning organization. In other words, he screwed the pooch. Liston should have been allowed to continue and anybody who disagrees with this must also think Dempsey deserved the knockout against Tunney and Tyson against Douglas where similar circumstances took place. Rules shouldn't be altered no matter how we think the fight would turn out or unfounded su****ions towards Liston. I have no doubt Ali would have still won, maybe even in that same round, but the fight was unjustly stopped.

The result itself is fishy, but the punch was legit. You can see that Liston was hit, and did not see it coming.

The punch and knockdown were legit......Liston staying down, however, was not. I don't think he was paid (took a dive) to do this, I just think he realized he didn't want to get up and continue fighting a guy he couldn't beat.

Interesting comments from Marciano and Dempsey.
