    Well, I was wrong.

I don't totally disagree that Ortiz more or less allowed himself to get KO'd after getting very frustrated. It was like he martyred himself and was willing to get layed out like that in order to prove to people he was willing to "go out on his back" like he said he would not do following the Maidana fight.

      A few other impressions...

Three things Marvin Hagler never did: He never apologized after headbutting an opponent, he never kissed an opponent, and when he was upset with Larry Merchant for not giving him the perceived proper credit, he never verbally assaulted him.

      Floyd wins, but loses.

In Floyd's defense, something needed to be done about all the buddy buddy stuff in the ring, all the excessive apologizing and glove tapping. The answer is a good swift punch in the whiskers, so honestly, gotta say kudos to that. I wish Manny had slipped one of Shane's 42 lovey glove taps and cracked him in the face!

      It's a fight!!

          I agree with that assessmnet.

Mayweather may not be a ruthless or aggresive fighter, but he's simply not a nice guy in there. He's a mean person in the ring and not there to be friends.

We've seen it time and time again, when Shane kept trying to touch gloves and put his hands down, he cracked him in the face.

Marquez in a similar situation when his hands were down after a clinch.

          Gatti too.

What the **** was all the hugging **** about with Ortiz? We're not here to hug we're here to fight..

If you do that kind of thing with Mayweather he will punch you in the mouth and he has absolutely every single right to.

Result: Mayweather KO4 Ortiz, protect yourself at all times! Mayweather wins the first three rounds easily with his amazing defensive prowess and lead right hands. In the forth, Victor had some success mauling Mayweather on the ropes but in an act of sheer frustration, he flagrantly lunged at Mayweather's face with his head. Referee Joe Cortez immediately took a point from an overly apologetic Ortiz, but then seemed to lose control after this. As the fighters came face to face to resume the action following a command of "let's go" from Cortez, Ortiz must not have been finished apologizing. Ortiz went to hug Mayweather again, and Mayweather (who had already been kissed by the overly apologetic Ortiz) hit Ortiz with a left hook and then a straight right which sent Ortiz crashing to the canvas as Joe Cortez looked away. Ortiz failed to beat the count and Mayweather had a KO win, which he guaranteed in the buildup to the fight. Things got ugly after the fight as Mayweather verbally assaulted HBO's Larry Merchant in the ring.

The quote of the night belonged to Merchant, who responded to Floyd's ugly tirade by saying, "If I was 50 years younger, I'd kick your ass!"

if ortiz pulled a fast one on floyd i don't think anybody would be complaining outside of the die hard flo - mo

floyd did his job. protect yourself at all times. that's nature of the sport.

victor wasn't playing nice in there.

they both started to box and protect themselves when they came together for a victor initiated hug out, before floyd threw the hook

where does it say in the rules that you've got to hug it out with an opponent after he headbutts for the second time in the fight (thats the most blatant headbutt i've ever seen in a fight. he drove upward with his legs and dropped his hands to generate leverage.)

victor turned to cortez to protest (who, by the way, wasn't even watching them) and got hit with a right hand that basically knocked him out.

no way he was beating that count, guys. sorry. you gotta be on your feet and ready to convince the ref you can continue by ten.

if he did by some grace of god he would have been open like a book to some flurries that would quickly get the fight stopped.

that fight was going to end in stoppage anyway
floyd couldn't miss with the right hand all night (and i don't want to toot my own horn, but i think somebody in the history section saw that coming. he's from new england ^^. oh and he called that joe cortez would likely put a dent in, if not completely ruin the fight)

i never want to see joe cortez ref again.
                  but floyd broke no rules
                  and was not dirty

pretty entertaining main event and card, though, to be honest

The way Mayweather verbally assaulted Merchant after the fight made me cringe and that was a total disgrace. As a fight reporter, I know how stressful it is when a fighter or a promoter etc retorts something you say face to face and so I was blown away by how composed Merchant stayed, and I loved what he said to Floyd, "If I was 50 years younger, I'd kick your ass."

                    Good for you Larry!
