Rocky 1 is a masterpiece of storytelling and acting, so beautiful and raw. Every time I have re-visited it as an adult, I have been shocked by how great it truly is. All the sequels are worthless though, apart from maybe Rocky Balboa - which isn't great by any means, but a nice sappy bookend. They could easily dispensed with everything in between.

Raging Bull is very good, though a tad overrated IMHO.

The Fighter was a lot of fun.

    Hurricane was......OK.

    Gladiator is frigging awful

Cinderella Man - it just felt so predictable and emotionally manipulative. You could just predict every beat. Not a bad film by any stretch but it just followed the formula to a T.

Million Dollar Baby - Not really sure how I feel about this. I don't think it's a truly great film but the....how can i say this.....moment the film spins into another direction certainly surprised me.

I'm gonna track down the other notable boxing movies and watch them (apparently James Franco did a boxing movie too )

But that's all I have for now.

Looking forward to the sequel to The Fighter (featuring Gatti), and Gael Bernal Garcia doing the Duran film in the future

What are your thoughts of Real Steel based on the previews?

The name sounds like it could be a name for a big fight from the 80s

              rocky

              raging bull

              the fighter

and million dollar baby (hilary swank, im single again. please call me)

              in order

the fighter hits close to home because i grew up very close to lowell, MA.
and as much of a douche as he is, christian bale is an unbelievable actor.

that movie is spot on outside of the boxing. anybody else get a huge kick seeing how little mark wahlburgs arms were?
he looked like a FW at best, all blown up and little.
****y and micky's sisters... literally spot on.. that's what its like in lowell.

              "mtv *****!!!"

My problem with Million Dollar Baby is how dank and depressing it is. What trainer worth his or her salt would put the corner stool in the ring upside down like that? And the female opponent that attacks Swank like that, just very unrealistic. The whole movie is a disgrace to the sport of boxing, IMO.

the ending of her career is bogus, obviously. most of the boxing in any movie i've seen is pretty much a disgrace to the sport, or at least completely unrealistic, until they bring in real fighters.

but the game of boxing, i believe is portrayed in at least an attempt at realism. it's a dirty, dirty game/business.

all the actors are tremendous (a rarity in sports movies, to be completely honest)
and the story outside of the boxing, with swank's family, and the and relationship she builds with her trainers, is terrific.

i believe it won four oscars (best male lead, best female lead, best support with freeman, and best picture, if im not mistaken)

                  on a semi-unrelated note
that woman she fights in her championship fight is lucia rijker. im pretty sure this was her first go at acting.
she's the best lb 4 lb female fighter ever. ever.
                  she's unreal

punched like a man. seriously. just like a man.

she was close to 20 and 0 with a boatload of knockouts

also was a kickboxing world champion

i do not envy her husband

                  more importantly:
how many girls did YOU know growing up that remind you of ****y ecklund's family in "the fighter?"
being a son of boston of course.

i watched that movie for the first time in peabody/danvers
literally one third of the women in the audience couldn't be distinguished from the actors portraying ****y's family

i knew i was home again haha

My favorite scene from The Fighter is when ****ie goes to jail he is laying on his bunk in his cell and he's going through crazy drug withdrawals and they show scenes from inside his head (above his head) and in this way the director shows the audience bits of the truth about about Eklund's fight with Sugar Ray Leonard.

Now for the record, **** Eklund did NOT knock down Sugar Ray Leonard, however he did go the distance with an all time great fighter determined to stop him. ****ie took a beating in Boston from a prime Ray Leonard, hitting the canvas three times during the fight but getting up and fighting back hurt each and every time. That is something to be proud of.

Stepping over Sugar Ray like he did? Well, that was uncalled for, and disrespectful to Ray as a fighter.

My favourite is definitely Raging Bull.

I have a bias because De Niro is possibly my favourite actor. But his performance in Raging Bull was just incredible in my opinion. Had Jake down to an absolute tee.

The Boxing scenes aren't all that though and are ****** at times, and don't look like fights. And the Valentines Day Massacre being completely overdone.

But I like the film more for the stuff outside the ring. Spine chilling likeness to Lamotta.

You said Jake's not looking too good now? Man, that's a shame.

He's like what? 90 years old now? The man has outlived all of his Son's!!

                      He's a tough, tough man.
