  • Bernardo Mercado

I've mentioned this guy several times before in boxing convos, but nobody was ever interested or knew about him. He was a rarity in that he was the only hw from Colombia that had some success as pro and wasn't black. He knocked out Trevor Berbick in 1 round and Earnie Shavers in 7. Lost to John Tate and Mike Weaver by TKO2 and TKO5 respectively. Was as big as a mountain, some sources say he was 6'4, others 6'6. A big puncher. Didn't seem to possess a sturdy chin, since he got tkoed by Leon Spinks, of all people. That stopped him from getting a title shot against Holmes. What a shame...Spinks was too small and had no chance against Larry, Mercado would at least have a puncher's chance.

Other than the fact that he wasn't black, why is he so interesting to you? There was nothing special about him. At all.

Mercado was a big strong heavyweight but very limited as John Tate showed.
Actually Neon Leon wasn't that bad around the time he beat Mercado but the Shavers he fought was past his prime. Shavers did a number on Mercado before being out lasted. Kind of like McBrides win over Tyson.

First of all, the thing with him not being black was just a curiosity issue. Nothing racial. And second, who's that hot chick?

I've mentioned Mercado a few times here as one of those guys who I always liked. I met him in Pittsburgh in 1981 when he was training for Randy Cobb. Got a few photos taken with him & he impressed me as a pretty cool guy.

I saw the Spinks fight. It was on the undercard of Holmes-Ali. Spinks kicked the crap out of Mercado, who was a very ordinary heavyweight with a bit of dog in him. But it probably was the second best performance I ever saw from Leon Spinks.

Did you see this fight live in Las Vegas, Scott?

Oh no. I watched it closed circuit in Anaheim.

Easy for me to remember because it was on my birthday

Cool. I remember after that Ring Magazine predicted Leon would beat Holmes.

I remember the old closed circuit shows. Like a drive in theater with a fuzzy picture. It was fun but not as much as the real thing.

Scott9945, did you attend many of the Forum promoted cards in Aniheim or even Inglewood?
