This "Title Bout" DREAM fight featured former heavyweight champion Floyd Patterson against popular 70's heavyweight brawler Ron Lyle in a match-up that featured an interesting contrast of styles. Patterson enjoyed an advantage in several key categories with his boxing skills, and Lyle's lack of defense made it even easier for Floyd to hit him. Lyle's power and Patterson's shaky chin made for interesting moments.
The fight was relatively even though the first 4 rounds, though Lyle suffered a serious bad gash over his left eye in the 3rd from a Patterson jab. In the 5th, Patterson seemed to take control, stunning Lyle with a right hook and then staggering him with a right cross. But then Lyle took the 6th with effective aggression despite the cut beginning to have a significant effect on his ability to control the fight at times. The cut over Lyle's eye got worse in the 7th and he was in very real danger of having the fight stopped.
Lyle made what would be his last bloody hurrah in the 8th, somehow dropping Patterson for a 9 count with a brutal uppercut and seriously hurting him. Patterson held on to survive the round but was still vulnerable in the upcoming 9th round from that knockdown. Had Patterson gone down in the 9th, the fight would have been stopped immediately. Instead, Patterson showed why he was a champion and he really went for the kill on a fatigued Lyle in the 9th. Floyd stunned Lyle to open the round and then dropped a defenseless bloody Lyle twice with quick combinations to the head.

Lyle got to his feet both times but the ref ruled him unfit to continue and called it of at 2:55 of the 9th round.
Result: Floyd Patterson KO9 Ron Lyle
Time of KO: 2:55
Scores at the time of stoppage: 86-86 Even, 86-85 Lyle, and 86-84 Patterson
Good fight!
