Everytime I read or see Tony Galento's name I just get vivid flashbacks of constant moronic discredit to Joe Louis (for obvious reasons)

So it leaves a bad taste in my mouth, or more 'frustrated taste' if you will.

But, Tony was a funny guy. Got to say I laughed at some of the posts of people playing back the great Tony Galento lines

Prime Tank Abbott would've whooped Two Ton Tony. But Kimbo and Two Ton would be close. All three, in prime, would beat Butterbean.

No comparision! Even BEFORE I read the book!

Tank Abbott tapped out (QUIT) when he got caught in a toe-crank!

Ever watch any of those "Surviving the Cut" military documentarys? Where the combat divers just about drown themselves in the water rather then quit & come up for air? The instructers have to revive these guys, who have almost suffocated from lack of air rather then quit. Well, that's about how Abbott looked at the end of most of his fights. Bent over, hands on his knees, gagging, gasping for air. The corner men are rushing to get to him before he keels over! And that's after a few minutes fighting! Pro heavyweight boxers with over 100 fights, who have lasted 10 rounds & BEAT most of the other pro fighters they've faced, would have no trouble with guys like Abbott.

I liked him back in the day. His KO of John Matua was aesome. But do you know what you're talking about regarding Abbott?

        Here's some of his info......

        VITAL STATISTICS
        Name David Abbott
        Nick Name Tank
        Record 10 - 14 - 0 (Win - Loss - Draw)
        Wins 6 (T)KOs ( 60 %)
        3 Submissions ( 30 %)
        1 Decisions ( 10 %)

        Losses 6 (T)KOs ( 42.86 %)
        6 Submissions ( 42.86 %)
        2 Decisions ( 14.29 %)

        Height 6'0" (183cm)
        Weight 250lbs (114kg)

Galento fought most of his career without a mouth piece & once bit his tongue almost in half. The Doc stitched him up & Galento went drinking instead of going home. The Doc got wind of it & found him in the bar. The stitches had worked themselves loose. The Doc told Tony he had to go back to the hospital to get his tongue re-attached.. Tony told the Doc to just sew him up right there, while he sat on the barstool. Tony never even winced!

Galento & thousands of boxers of his ilk would have destroyed David Abbott!
And saying that Kimbo Slice was on par with a Galento is ridiculous. It really is. I knew that BEFORE I read the book!

        1. Galento 2. Butterbean 3. Abbott 4. Slice.

I never herd that about Gleason but it should figure. Any guys spending that much time in early pool halls was bound to be able to handle himself in one capacity or another.

Was just doing a bit of reading up on Tony there after this thread re perked my interest and i came across an article claiming his brother wanted free tickets to the Louis fight (the night before), Galento told him to get in line like everyone else so his brother took a beer bottle over his head and Tony needed stitches for the 3 inch gash on his head but went ahead with the Louis fight regardless

This has never been printed before, anyone buy it?

I'm skeptical it happened, but I will say this. It's something I holisticaly believe he would do.

Terry-A: Hey buddy! That was a bad ass write up thanks for that. I'm glad you didn't let that slip by unaddressed.

That happened 3 days before Galento fought Max Baer. The brother wanted free tickets to a fight & Tony said "Get in line like evrybody else!" His brother threw a bottle of beer at Tony, who naturally, forgot to duck. It hit him in the chin, needing stitches. His brother's wife said "Tony can sometimes be a difficult man."

Has there ever been 2 bigger characters with a capital C in the ring together at one time than this, shame it was a wrestling match

Ha. I liked the announcer describing Galento as "the shorter and the harrier of the two".
