      It's subjective.

"Sports is something you play with a ball, swimming is something you do so you don't drown." Annie Hall

I don't consider prize fighting a sport. I think it is a fist fight.

The more boxing skills (technique=sport) you possess, the better you'll be at it, but in the end, you're not in a sporting event, you're in a fist fight.

Not the same thing as 'sport.'

IMO I go with Woody Allen, basketball is a sport. Prize fighting isn't.

              No!

              Video gaming as well, no.

              Let's keep sport athletic.

Fine. Swimming is a sport then. Looking for non-sports misnamed could yield much cleaner results without (treading) the fringes. Horse racing, then, is clearly not a sport, except for horses. Neither is auto racing. Neither is Olympic stacking. Neither is chess, checkers, bingo, poker or slot machines. Neither is big game hunting a sport. Neither is fishing. Non-contact martial arts tournaments are borderline.

Boxing is a sport, UFC is a sport, but not by your logic, sir. Your logic says track & field is not a sport either, because primitive man only ran fast to pursue animals, and only threw things to hit them.

There is no logic to it. The swimming was a Woody Allen joke. You're trying to hard and not having fun.

Anyway - No! -- boxing is a sport; prize fighting is a fight.

Some methods changed because of science, but so have all the sports. It isn't bad, what is bad is the fighters now earn more money for lesser activity and probably don't fully develop their potential. Boxing is their employment, while decades ago, the athletes had also a profession (maybe not all of them, but was very common). I think they did it tougher because of the number of fights they had, but also because they were up to 15 rounds.

I think boxing however didn't evolve in something very important - weight classes. You can't call someone weighing up to 79 kg/175 lb a light heavy person! This is more like a normal person, but not close to a heavy athlete. And I mean that weight classes are terrible after the light heavyweight.

What boxing changed for the worse are the multiple sanctioning bodies which pretend to have principles and rules, but they actually don't.
