  • Greb vs Walker street fight

Anybody know the story there? I havent heard too much about it but i read a while back after their bout which Greb won on points over 15 in 1925 that they met up and after a few drinks Mickey accused Greb of being a dirty fighter (which he seems to have been!) saying his favourite combination was a thumb to the eye followed by a thumb to the other eye! Before Harry could get his coat off to resume their fight Walker sucker punched him.

Ive also heard this is not true and that Greb never once lost in the streets.

Anybody shed any light on this?

Many years ago I read Walker's autobiography. I think it was called "The Toy Bulldog". Anyway, Walker talked about the Greb fights, both in the ring and out. He said in the match he lost the first five rounds and the fight was even the rest of the way. Afterwards in or near a bar they got into it again. Walker claimed that fight was even. Please keep in mind that I read this book over 40 years ago so there is a margin for error here.

I'm trusting my memory here, lol. I was probably about 13 when I read that book.

I have Walkers autobiography account here in Grebs bio and it runs right along your memory for the most part. Interestingly Grebs friend Harry Keck says it never happened."I was with Greb from the time we left the Polo grounds after Harry's brilliant victory, until we checked into a mid-town hotel. We didn't even see Walker. Walker says it happened; I say it didn't. If he's happy with that let him have it."

i have read alot of stuff on greb and i don't think the barfight with walker ever happened, but it makes a good story for mickey to tell. the one that did happen was how greb got his title shot against johnny wilson, wilson kept ducking greb for a couple years until greb spread a rumor that'd he been doing some heavy drinking instead of training, so wilson thought, now i'll fight greb, this will be the only time. when they got in the ring wilson saw that it was all a lie and he caught such a bad beatdown he was happy to escape the ring with his life and didn't even care that he'd been fooled by greb and lost the middleweight title

That story sounds similar to the Story about Ketchel rematching Billy Papke after Papke had suckered him in their first fight.I could be confusing the two, I'll have to check.

There was always an old story that Walker pleaded with Greb to permit him to last the distance in the ring --- such was Greb the beast. I would say the street fight at least implies that probably wasn't correct.

the same outcome happened in both stories, papke caught a beatdown in the rematch. i read about him also, he was a scumbag who killed his wife. wilson, i just feel sorry for, he knew he couldn't beat greb, he was just trying to hold onto his belt
