Mel Turnbow, Bossman Jones, Jimmy Ellis, Levi Forte, Roy Tiger Williams, Terry Lee, Johnny Hudgins, Rufus Brassel, Blue Lewis and Alonzo Johnson used to beat the **** out of Muhammad Ali all day. It's sparring. Good sparring includes screwing up and turning it back around like you will eventually have to do in a fight.
No big deal. Being undefeated in sparring? What for?

Take no notice of Queensbury Fool he knows **** all about anything.
Burley was a very hard puncher.
In1944 giving Archie Moore 6 pounds he dropped him 4 times.
In 1942 151lbs Burley took on Jay D Turner219lbs and beat the **** out of him stopping him in 6 rds.
1942 Burley fought 112-30-23 Jackie Burke knocked him down 7 times and stopped him in7rds.
1938 Burley conceded 8 lbs toJjmmy Bivins and floored him.
In1938 Burley knocked Cocoa Kid down 3 times.
1945 Giving away 6 lbs Burley floored Oakland Billy Smith twice.
In 83 wins Burley score 50 kos.
" Charley Burley And The Black Murderers Row",by Harry Otty is a good read.it has a lot of detail on this great fighter.
          Good post.

In 1944 Archie had 6 losses including one TKO by Eddie Booker and several years before becoming The Mongoose of Lore.
JD was the epitome of a journey hvy with 15 career KO losses.
Ez on short notice subbed for a Burley opponent and near KOed him in 1942

My bookseller list this for $30, a sum that I could pick up 20 epic Bios, Autobios, and Historical Works at my public library sale far more enlightening than Burley. I have never seen a boxing or baseball book for sale at my library that relies on public donations where I've purchased dedicated books by noted authors and scholars.

I've already acknowledged Burley as a fine feller and much nicer, more polite, and more erudite than you to damn him in faint praise. In fact, I'm quite fond of Charley, but he's hardly the boxing force you try to make him into. Only film a limited poor quality footage with Oakland Billy Smith who was competitive throughout. Handsome, intelligent, well put together feller who'd probably do anything else but boxing if he was coming up in today's generation.

You called Burley a feather fisted fighter, a totally fatuous remark from an ignorant fool.
Are you under the impression your likes and dislikes hold any gravitas for us?
Lets cut to the chase, you are only here to seek attention, you have no interest in pugilism and certainly no knowledge of it worth sharing . You will say any absurdity just at long as you can elicit a reaction, you crave attention
and will make yourself appear a complete cretin to get it. How sad your life must be.Bought that poison yet?

yeah sparring isn't a good indicator because it's not always fair. Often fighters are tired, or had been sparring for rounds before and a fresh guys hops in. Or even a fighter shows up fresh and the other dude is finishing a workout. Some times the weight discrepancies are also very large.

In ali's case, he brought Holmes in to get him ready and in shape (because he was out of shape). Holmes being young and hungry with no money obviously had something to prove. He always goes on about how he had ali's number in sparring, but once again - context. Imagine a young Ali coming in and preparing Holmes for Spinks.
