Lennox was put to sleep in the 2nd round by Oliver McCall. He is the only fighter believed by many to be "great" who was put to sleep so convincingly and so early in a fight by a single punch. This is a fact. I started a thread on it and with many replies, he was the only one - FACT.
It's the referee's count not 10 seconds that decides it.
I agree with you. At the count of 10 Lennox had stumbled into the ref and then side to side. He could not continue and the stoppage was the correct call. If not in that case, then when?

I do believe the correct call was made, it was his legs that gave it away you cannot see it very well in the camera but, he has no legs. They're gone, nowhere.

I've seen worse allowed to continue. It was early in a title fight and the champion though shaky did beat the count. Which other heavyweight champions were waved off on their feet like that? Past champions were hurt as bad and allowed to continue. Holmes against Snipes is always one that springs to mind. Think the Lewis ref would have let Dempsey carry on after Firpo delivered him into the laps of the ringside press?

Yes, it is not a contraversial stoppage though it's not something I would complain about, I would have no quams if the ref stopped the fight or let it go on but, Lewis was falling forward still unsteady right before the fight was ot be resumed and that warrants a stoppage in my opinion.
Referees were a lot more leniant back in the day and getting knocked out of the ring could still be a great force or balance issues that caused it rather than actually the breain shutting down. Especially with the 3 roped rings.
I see none of the Dempsey supporters want to defend his 3 year vacations where he keeps the belt.
They must know that if any decent HW had this luxury, theyd be undefeated.
In the old days you done all your work before you were Champion and then you had earned the priveledge and got to rest on your laurels, only after Louis' era did that idea start to change.

A lot of bunk fighters couldve reached LEGENDARY status if they employed the Dempsey rule.
Imagine if Tyson took a 3 year vacation right after the first Bruno Fight? -No Buster Douglas.... -Tyson keeps his Aura of invincibility.. -All the unwarranted praise Tyson recieved in the 80's hardens into stone-cold facts
What if Sonny Liston took a 3 year vacation after beating Patterson?
-No phantom punch -Ali's boxing liscence is gone by the time Liston returns -Liston is considered the greatest of all time
