His lack of concentration/focus was another big problem of his. It would always come around just after the mid-late rounds when physical tiredness turns into mental tiredness. That's when you need to focus most, and one of his huge problems was he really slackened during this time in fights. He would always get hurt, hit bad, his punches grew sloppy and he made silly mistakes that he wouldn't have been making earlier or was able to get out of earlier. It's what lost him, or nearly lost him, many of his fights.Comment

His two biggest flaws for me were his late round laziness/lack of focus and his habit of throwing a couple of shots that were very easily countered, most notably the uppercut that he always threw from too far out. That shot got him knocked out against Holyfield and he threw it much too often. The very first thing you learn when training the uppercut is to shoot it inside and up close. It's the worst punch to get countered with and very easily countered when you throw it too far away.

I agree with you that there is more to being a great boxer then just obvious things like speed, power, foot speed, chin. Things like speed and power and good foot work are the easy things for a person to see but don't necesssarily lead to a good boxer. I think what Douglas did to Tyson though shows that he was more then just a physically great boxer. But like you point out he has made what you think is a basic mistake with his upper cut.
I am still not prepared to say that Douglas when he fought Tyson and Berbick was less of a boxer then Lewis or the Klitschkos though. I think I notice things about Douglas that made him a better boxer. But I could be wrong, still I can't just go around believing something that I don't think is true. Just because more people agree on something does not make it a fact. Last I heard the Rolling Stone's were voted the best rock band ever, I don't believe that either.
Thanks for pointing out the uppercut I will look for it next fight of his I watch.Last edited by Holtol; 01-01-2011, 06:07 AM.Comment
