Ricky Hatton's Natural Talent

How much did Hatton have in his prime? You can say what you want about his hitting and holding and how he was purely a brawler, but watching his fights, I can see a good bit of talent there. He had decent handspeed and although he wasn't a homerun hitter, he was a solid doubles hitter and he had almost unnatural strength for the division. The only guy I ever saw match him strengthwise (at 140, anyway, 147 was a different story) was Juan Urango and even then, it was fairly close. His footspeed was awesome and he had decent head movement when he remembered it, which wasn't enough of the time. Had he had more discipline with his out of the ring habits and better fundamental schooling, could Ricky Hatton have done more? Could he have stood a chance against the Mayweathers and Pacquiaos of the world? I still don't think he would have beaten them because of their combination of awesome skill and athleticism, but could he have been more representative in those fights?

Never. Did he have talent? Compared to me, hell yeah. Compared to Henry Armstrong, SRR, Mayweather. No.

He held a belt, he beat Kostya Tszyu (sp?). But compared to the greats he didn't have the talent nor the drive to train and train and come up with alternative game plans to compete with them.

Ricky Hatton was a good boxer, no two ways about it. He had a good amateur pedigree and showed some really good form now and again.

He broke into the pound for pound top 10 on two separate occasions which is hardly shabby.

He never had any business going to welterweight, Luis Collazo showed that he was vulnerable at the higher weight. So why Hatton's team thought he had a chance against Mayweather.....I dont know?

After the Mayweather defeat, his chin never seemed to be as good as it once was even back at the old light welterweight. I blame this on shedding too much weight too often.

If I'm honest, I think that if the Hatton that fought Tszyu or Castillo were to fight Pacquiou or Mayweather those nights at light welterweight, I think we might have seen much better performances from him..........although I very much doubt winning performances.

Id expect manny too stop him and floyd too win a decision,and i think it would be quite close if hatton was allowed to fight his fight aswell,cortez's performance was terrible that night

Cortez's performance was terrible, but watch that fight again with the commentary off. Floyd schooled him in every possible aspect. Cortez didn't turn it from a Ricky fight to a Floyd fight, he turned it from a clean fight to an ugly one.

Ive watched it with the commentary off and ive no doubt that it would have been a closer affair had it been at 140 with a fair referee,Jmo

At 140 is a totally different story. Ricky was freaky strong and I think Floyd added a hell of a lot of muscle after the jump to welter. That would have been a different story on the inside...but Floyd dances away and blows his face up with combinations that he seems to have lost at welter.

Thats where floyd won the fight at 147,on the inside-he actually surprised me with his performance and showed a different aspect of his game that he doesnt get much credit for

I agree. I still think Cortez or not he gets stopped, but never gives up until he does.
