I can't think of any top contenders he faced who weren't shot. Vitali is the only one, but he to me was never a threat to Lennox, as he isn't as good as the heavies listed above.
I disagree with this. Business is business. Bowe trashed the WBC belt when Lennox was his mandatory. Tyson gave him step aside money to fight Holy. If Mike had one that fight would have been even bigger. Smart move. As far as Holy goes..both had other business to take care of in the years 93', 94' and 95'. I just gon't see where a duck can be insinuated.

Finally they were scheduled to meet in the late 90s, only for the finances to fall through.
George never actually retired from boxing until after Briggs. His 10 year hiatus was just 10 years of ducking. Go ahead and look into it. He never officially retired, not making it up at all.

Just look at the dates. His last fight before his hiatus was against Jimmy Young in 1977. Holmes then proceeded to dominate the Heavyweight division from 1978 to 1985. Larry announced his first retirement in 1986. Oddly enough, George started fighting again in 1987. Larry came back out of retirement in 1988, tried his best to get a fight with George over the next 10 years, but ultimately failed.

      Ultimate duck.

On the contrary, he fought Duran a 3rd time in 89, and also fought Tommy Hearns again.

I think you're downplaying him. He is textbook greatness.

He ducked those rematches for 8 years.

Duran was pretty damn old and he only fought Tommy cuz he thought Tommy was washed up.

What would have been the point of this fight had it happened? I don't believe (and I may be wrong) either were ranked in the top 10 at the same tome during their respective comebacks in the late 80's and early 90's.

Legacy is the point. Forget the ratings, both proved they were still relevant by beating Undefeated Champions (though Mercer dumped his belt). The fight should have happened. People would pay to watch the damn fight even now.

So George retired in 1977 to avoid a fairly obscure former Ali sparring partner who had beaten 0 top contenders up that point. Right. So what he never officially retired? I'd say ten years without so much as setting foot in a gym was as good as a retirement. Then suddenly at age 37, obese and odds-on to get humiliated, he decides to return, simply because the guy he was ducking had retired? If that were true then surely he'd have re-retired the moment Holmes un-retired, no?

As I said, Foreman was ready to face Holmes in the 70s and the 90s, and both fights fell through for reasons which were not his fault. No ducking.

Out of curiosity, why did Holmes vacate his WBC belt when he was ordered to face #1 contender Greg Page, and then fight the unrated Marvis Frazier instead?

Some serious denial going on here. And Holmes ducked Page. Straight up. Frazier fight was worth more money. Easy choice to make. George didn't really duck Holmes for better financial choices, just better legacy ones, as he was obviously going to lose.

Foreman ducking Holmes comes down to his inability to deal with technical boxing.
