You just described 99.9 percent of the black people in the world. The NOI just brought it to light.

Ali was an impressionable athlete, and human being at that time, looking to define himself and impower himself. And the Nation was the way.Unfortunately, it came at the expense of his relationship with Malcolm.

          - - NOI today ain't NOI of yesteryear.

There was a vacuum of lawlessness in many black neighborhoods in the day that NOI tamed to make those neighborhoods respectable. I doubt NOI of today has much influence as back in Ali's day, see Chicago, but I haven't really studied the issue.

Back in my year of Trucking ca 2005, up Jersey main highway I pulled in a massive truck stop for relief. I entered in my working man's clothes with a half dozen immacuately suited NOI trailing me. We lined up, took car of biz, washed, and hit the road. Nary a word was exchanged, friendly or hostile, a typical public bathroom experience for me.

Malcolm had a different experience, and Ali wisely kept his big mouth shut and managed to ease out intact.

I find it difficult to believe the NOI would have wacked Ali like they did X.

It would have brought the whole nation down on them. Whites couldn't have cared less about X, but taking out a celebrity who had cross over prestige into the White community wouldn't have gone unpunished.

Back in 1933 (or there abouts) Dutch Schultz was going to wack Thomas Dewey (who was in the process of putting Schultz in prison).

Lucky Luciano and the syndicated told him, "No." He told Luciano to F off, he wasn't spending what was left of his life in prison. --> Dutch Schultz was dead less than 48 hours later.

Flash forward to the late 30s and Dewey put Luciano away for 12 years on a simple pimp charge. Luciano applied the same syndicate rules to himself (no 'clean' public official could be touched) and still wouldn't allow Dewey to be murdered.

In the end the NOI cut off official relations with Ali when he chose to fight again in '70. He was read out of the organization; the NOI wanted him to remain a persecuted martyr, a victim of the White government. Ali retaliated a few years later (circa 1975) when he announced he was separating from the NOI and pursing the peaceful Sunni variation of Islam.

Of course Jabir Herbert Muhammad, son of Elijah Muhammad remained Ali manager. It seems that publicity wise Ali was no longer of value to the NOI but they still bled his purses for a % until the bitter end.

              - - Ali and Herbert wouldn't convert until after the death of Elijah in February 1975.

November post Foreman Playboy interview he's still spewing NOI gospel. Ali could be very wise and toe the line when he and the life of his family was on the line.
