  • Jerry Quarry- today?

How would Jerry Quarry fair today. He was 6''0, had a reach of 72'' weighed around the 195-200lb mark, but he was in shape at the weight, and not carrying excess fat.

What would his status be today as a HW? King of the weight? Does he beat either Klitschko? Would he sit just below them?

Discuss what his status in the division would be, and your thoughts on head to heads between him, either Klit, and contenders like Chambers, Peter etc

He could beat some of the contenders today but he might have fought at cruiserweight if he fought now.

Jerry Quarry would be by a long way the best boxer/fighter in the heavyweight division if fighting today, Quarry could box exceptionally well and as a counter-puncher was one of the best. He had a chin made of granite and liked nothing better than to be fighting guys who was far bigger than he was, Quarry had little trouble taking care of thunderous punchers Earnie Shavers, Ron Lyle & Mac Foster, he was good enough to out-box Floyd Patterson and chop down Big Buster Mathis, he stood and fought a prime Joe Frazier in RMFOTY 1969.. George Foreman openly admitted to avoiding Jerry Quarry and if Quarry was fighting today IMO he would have no trouble beating every fighter in the Top 10 including The Klitschko's

Out of the current Ring top 10 HWs, I think he beats Dimitrenko, Valuev, Boytsov, Chagaev and Adamek, loses to Chambers and Wlad. Klitschko, toss up fights with Haye and Vitali Klitschko (who at 39 is starting to slide.)

George Foreman is likely giving respect to a very good contender in the toughest HW era ever, but I seriously doubt he ducked him, or that Quarry would've lasted the distance with George.

Why are you casting doubt on something which actually happened, Quarry hammered Shavers to put himself in the No1 position to fight Foreman, Newspapers was calling for that fight as well as the general public yet Foreman wanted nothing to do with Jerry Quarry. Yet because you was not around at that time you are doubting that it ever happened so i suggest you watch the Quarry vs Shavers fight with interviews and you will see & hear both Gil Clancy & Don Dunphy both calling for Foreman to step up and fight Jerry Quarry the No1 contender... Why would Quarry not last the distance with Foreman yet he hammered Ron Lyle, Earnie Shavers & Big Mac Foster who all measured up to Foreman, Quarry chopped down Buster Mathis who was huge compared to Foreman, Quarry beat Tony Alongi who was bigger than Foreman with Lyle & Shavers both just as powerful as Foreman, George and his team knew that Quarry was a very good counter-puncher with a chin made of iron

The truth is that there was never any real demand for Foreman-Quarry. Jerry was Frazier's leftovers and Foreman owned Frazier. It might have been an interesting fight (although I don't think so), but there was no hype or demand for it.

You say Mathis was huge compared to Foreman, but the truth is that Buster was barely taller and in reality a fat guy with no power. Tony Alongi was NOT bigger than Foreman, and actually rail thin. Yes, I have actually seen these guys in the ring. Plus you are wrong about Quarry beating Alongi. They fought twice, both times the fight was a draw. Go ahead and look it up. Do you really think George Foreman would have been held to a draw by a fringe contender like Alongi? Twice?

He'd be a great champion today but he would probably have fought at LHW and CW, maybe going to Hw later on similar to Adamek. He was weighing in under the 200 pound limit on day of fight weigh in rules, so he would have no trouble dropping down quite low. I could easily see him as a LHW, then CW and HW. He'd win at LHW and CW easily and would beat anyone not named the Klit's at HW. They would be great, tough fights though for both guys.

Other than the Klitschko's,I don't see any heavyweight who'd beat him.Quarry is a more complete, durable fighter than any heavyweight competing today.

Size can make a difference, but only when combined with a reasonable amount of skill.

rubbish... Quarry lost in 69 on cuts to Frazier in a fight that was a classic, Quarry fought his way back to be No1 contender for Foremans title and there was huge demand for Foreman to fight Quarry with quarry being voted the most popular fighter in the world from 1967-70 he hammered Shavers in the opening round to cement his position as No1 contender... i have both fights of Quarry vs Alongi and IMO Quarry won both fights, i brought up Alongi as he is similar in height to Foreman whereas Buster Mathis was a huge man who was nimble on his feet and had very good boxing skills that was far better than what Foreman had yet Quarry destroyed Mathis who was 30-1.. Foreman would have needed far more than a big punch to beat Jerry Quarry as Shavers, Lyle & Foster all found out.. Quarry was only a novice pro when he fought Alongi twice with Alongi being tipped for stardom and Rocky Marciano even buying into his contract.

I agree with this but, Quarry had problems with cuts and bleeding so this may play a factor in modern fights which are not as "leniant" with cuts as old fights were. Apart from that a very good analysis of a great fighter.
