Neither one has a bomb resume, but Tarver and his destructions of Trinidad (no matter the size) and Pavlik outweigh Calzaghe's wins over both himself (which was debatable, just rewatched and I had it 6-6 for Hopkins because of the KD) and Kessler.

I think they quite similar in terms of the path they took. Dominating a division for a long period of time, amassing a bunch of successful title defenses before finally moving up in weight when they're past their best. Hopkins' resume is better though.
