yes i have watched a lot of old fights,i just dont think that there is even 1 fighter from the 50s down that would be able to fight in todays game,from the sixties only ali and foreman,[foreman proved it] would be able to compete today

No he's not overated, he deserves his place after ali, although some of his title defenses were against severely outmatched opposition.

Joe Louis had a fragile chin(dropped countless times as a fighter), lacked great footwork, lateral movement and had no answer to movement and a scientific boxer:

Ezzard Charles - Totally outclassed Louis with his supreme boxing ability

Jersey Joe Walcott 1 - This was a highway robbery and proved once again Louis couldn't handle movement.

A ringside poll of 32 boxing writers had 21 scoring the bout for Walcott, 10 scoring it for Louis and 1 scoring it a draw


Billy Conn 1 - Louis was totally outclassed by this LHW sweet scientist and was on his way to an embarrassing defeat until Conn got careless and decided to go for the KO

Max Schmeling - Knocked Louis Out badly, further proving he had a terrible chin


Most of his title reign consisted of jokers from "The Bum of The Month Club"

Louis fought Jack Roper who had 39 losses!!!! Imagine if Ali or Vitali fought someone like that as Champ.

He fought Bob Pastor who had 17 KO's in over 50 wins and would later get stopped by Conn!!!! He gave rematches to fighters whom he never should have fought even once. Why did he duck Elmer Ray, Turkey Thompson, Lem Franklin, and Lee Q Murray for stiffs like Savold, Simon, McCoy and Musto???

Louis on the scorecards is well behind these men on points. In a modern sense he looses to Conn in 12 rounds. He was robbed vs Walcott too as it was 15 rounds. He was in his prime or very close to it for these matches. Forget the fact that he was stunned by Farr and dropped by Galeno. I have been saying this for years. And watch Godoy 1 and tell me what your think of the surviving footage. Double dare you.

One was a vision impaired light heavyweight in his last fight, the other ( Walcott ) was robbed blind in this first fight and way ahead in their second match until he got cute and caught

If he gave title shots to Elmer Ray, Turkey Thompson, Lem Franklin, and Lee Q Murray he probably loses once more. Maybe twice. He pretty much avoided Rosenbloom. No title shots to Obie Walker or Tiger Fox either.

He never did hit anybody often unless they are standing still his movement was that sluggish

Oh boy, here we go again. Louis overrated? Louis was 50-4 as an amateur with 43 kos. He was the AAU light heavyweight champion. As a pro he was 68-3 with 54 kos. Champion for almost 12 years with 25 defenses. I'm glad I'm tore up.

Of course he has many visible flaws and would lose a lot more than three times if he fought today. Posters who think otherwise are not being honest with them themselves and continue to BS themselves the he was superman. Three men who weighed under 200 pounds and severals other gave him trouble. Cruiser weights to super middles! He was great in his own era but outside of it, well not so great.
