  • Fighters who are overrated as punchers

Name and discuss fighters who you think are overrated as punchers. Ron Lyle and Gerald McClellan jump immediately to mind for me. Both have great ko percentages, but a closer look at their opposition takes away from the glitter. McClellan has an excuse because his career was tragically cut short. Ike Ibeabuchi is another fighter who's power I see as vastly overrated. Opinions?

I would say Nigel Benn, De Witt was not the same fighter when he fought Benn, Iran Barkley was stopped on a 3 KD rule and was almost stopped by Roberto Duran, was stopped in a war with Robbie Sims, so even though Barkley had a good chin it was not untouchable.

Benn seemed to get to De Witt by breaking him down by consistently hitting him. I never thought he was a devastating puncher, not at world class anyway, a hard puncher but not devastating.

Gerry Cooney. He ko'd old men and stiffs, but when put in with HOF competition(Holmes, Spinks and Foreman) his power meant nothing, as he was stopped in all 3 fights.

John Mugabi. Knocked out pretty much any time he stepped up beyond club fighters, which is about all he ever knocked out. Didn't fare any better at 154 either.

Vitali Klitschko, because of his high KO %. Doesn't hit anywhere near as hard as his little brother, he just throws faaaaar more power punches and usually gets the stoppage because of accumulation.

He was actually only knocked down twice in that fight. One was not a KD. Th ****** ref had no idea what he was doing in that fight. The rest were all rabbit punching KD's. Ridiculous fight. Dirty Benn and a ****** for a ref.

Bloody disgrace. Benn would have gone on to lose that fight too.

I agree with the Lyle shout. He never stopped a top 10 contender.

Lyle certainly punched hard enough for Joe frazier to avoid ever fighting him.

Anyways,my pick would be the vastly overrated Kostya Tszyu. His knockouts usually came through an accumulation of punishment rather than legitimate knockouts. He never hurt, let alone knocked out a durable opponent.Rather than make a statement and try and knock ben Tackie out,he took the easy route and didn't even bother.

Also, for such a supposed devestating puncher, you would have thunk Wilfredo Gomez could have atleast took his power up four pounds. He dominated Laporte and yet never hurt him once.Nelson,Lockridge and Layne showed no respect for his power.

He planted Shavers while he was rated in the top ten.Luis Garcia was still rated in the top ten five months before Lyle knocked him out.He also knocked out future top ten contender Larry Middleton

Did anyone hurt LaPorte though? The man had a chin made of steel.

I don't really think of Gomez as a one punch bomber though, he was just very effective at getting his opponents out of there, as his record proves.
