  • Prime Muhammad Ali vs Prime Jack Dempsey - Who Wins?

In your opinion who wins this fight?

From what you have seen from both these fighters on film who takes it?

Would Ali's chin be able to handle Dempsey's punches?

Would Dempsey even be able to land a punch?

i think Muhammad Ali would win the fight in a replica of Ali v Frazier (1) & Dempsey v Tunney (1).. both virtually identical match-ups, no way would it be a walk in the park for either fighter... Ali PTS

Ali by decision. No walkover though!

Ali rarely shone against fast, aggressive smaller guys. Sonny banks, Doug Jones, Henry Cooper, Bob Foster, Jimmy Ellis and Floyd Patterson (in their second meeting!) all gave a very useful Ali (if not quite prime) problems. You would have to admit that Dempsey was very likely better than all of this bunch.

I think that for much of the fight Ali would jab, move and catch Dempsey with combinations but Dempsey's sheer speed, pace and power would pose problems.

I love Jack Dempsey, but didn't he have trouble with slick boxers?

          Hi Boxingboy,

I think most who subscribe to that view are those who cite the Tunney fights as evidence.

Jack was post prime and had been very inactive for three years before facing Gene.......who lets face it was one of the best pound for pound technical/slick 'boxers' who ever lived.

George Carpentier (whilst small) was a very slick boxer.....another ATG, but he only had one brief moment of sucess in four one sided rounds by Dempsey.

I haven't watched the Brennan or Gibbons fights for some time, but dont remember Dempsey being troubled by their skills too much.

dempsey by ko. ali had trouble with crouchers. plus dempsey was quick and quicjk handed and ali slowed up by round 8 or so. great fight which goes to dempsey - frazier with 2 hands

I think Dempsey was too wild to beat Ali, Dempsey got off balance quite a bit and I think movers gave him trouble because he constantly had to reset his feet, Tunney wasn't the only guy to give him trouble with movement. Ali knew how to spoil on the inside by holding on. After the initial Dempsey onslaught I think Ali takes over and picks Dempsey apart to be honest.

Ali was much bigger, as well as faster, moved well and is a better boxer.

Like Silencers said, Dempsey needed to keep resetting to try and land vs good movers, and few were better than Ali at moving around and sniping at you from a distance. I think Ali just catches him from the outside, doesn't let him get set, and smothers him in close if he gets there.

I think Ali would stop him eventually.

Carpentier was 170 odd pounds vs Dempsey, and was under 6''0. In Ali we have a guy who is 210 and at least 6''3. With an 80 inch reach. Not trying to imply Ali wins solely because of his size, but when you are up against a better boxer, coupled with a 20 odd pound weight deficit, and height/reach...Makes it that bit harder.

And with Tunney, good boxer but 190 lbs.

Ali is a better boxer than both these guys, and bigger, and has a great chin and recuperative abilities.

Tough fight for Dempsey to win, even at his peak.

                    Ali would've picked Dempsey apart.

                    Ali by one-sided UD.
