When one fighter beats his opponent from pillar to post in a round but doesn't score a knockdown it's usually scored a 10-8 round. A knockdown doesn't automatically get you a 10-8 round btw: If your opponent is easily winning the round but you manage to get in a flash knockdown there's a very good chance you'll only win the round 10-9. Scoring rounds is a bit more complicated to allow the use of set formulas.

Looking at the poll I see that both Mickey and Prince actually agree on something; does that mean the world is coming to an end? LOL this is an apocalyptical sign ala 9-11, tsunami, earthquakes in haiti, China, Pakistan, Katrina etc.

Just pointing it out, hopefully this won't draw more infighting.

        as i remember it :

Merchant on Leonard : Do you feel lucky to get he draw?

That sums it up how the HBO panel saw it.

I had the impression that Hearns was way ahead but i didnt score it round by round.

I'm quite familiar with the scoring system. It has to be a real thrashing for a round to be scored 10-8 with no knockdowns, it should be reserved for extreme cases (I can only think of a a few ever I would give the nod to). Of course a knockdown doesn't guarantee a 10-8, a fighter can be dominating a round and eat a flash knockdown, in that case it should justifiably be 10-9 for the opponent (Barrera-Marquez would have been a good example of this if it weren't for that debacle with the ref).

You know, that's it! I've finally had it with this! This isn't directed at you btw Tengoshi. I've just had it with everyone that always argues that it should have been a KD scored for Barrera.

Ok, I'm hi******* this thread for a bit, it's silly anyway (people arguing that Leonard actually won that fight!?). Haa! Give me a break.

I'm always shocked when I hear someone bring up the Marquez/Barrera fight and that round which should supposedly have been scored a KD in favour of Barrera. The debacle was that Barrera wasn't disqualified, not that the KD wasn't scored in his favour!!!!

If ever there was a case for someone being DQ'd after hitting someone when they were down, it is that fight. He put him down, turned, looked down, pulled back, hesitated and then decided to go for it and "BOOM" right on the back/side of the head. The commentators are saying "Well, that's obviously a KD, why didn't the ref score it as such?" while completely ignoring the fact that Barrera just did one of the few immediately DQ'able offenses.

How can anyone possibly argue that it should have been scored a KD for Barrera? In most other similar situations the guy has been flat out DQ'd straight away. Barrera only had a point taken off, and that was really lenient.

I'll be happy to offer a rebuttal. Where was the referee? You saw Barrera hesitate when the referee didn't step in to call the knockdown, and when he didn't Barrera went right back at him. You can argue that maybe it was more him being pissed at no call than going in for the kill to GET a knockdown called, but I'm sick of Barrera taking heat as a dirty fighter for that one. It was a heat of the moment thing predicated on referee inaction. If the ref didn't have his head up his ass the knockdown would have been scored, Barrera wouldn't have hit Marquez while he was down, and the fight could have continued normally.

There were two rounds 5 and 12 that could have been scored 10-8 for SRL as he had Hearns badly hurt. There were a few rds which have gone either way, putting all things considered i don't think having it a draw was a classic robbery.

There are many examples of guys getting knockdown twice and still winning fights or getting draws.
Actually, I was just watching this fight, and the difference was one of the judges did give Leonard the 12th round 10-8. If he had scored it 10-9 Leonard, Hearns would have won by one point. I thought Hearns won myself, but thought it was close.

Oh yeah and Hearns/Leonard 2 was also released on VHS a little after it took place and if you watch the VHS version, they show you the round by round socres from all 3 judges. I think one of the judges gave 10-8 t Leonard in the 5th. I know for sure one of them gave Leonard a 10-8 round for Rd 12.
