Post ban Ali had amazing composure. Pre ban Ali panicked in the first Liston fight before righting the ship. But in his defense he was young and up against a beast who in many opinions likely had an illegal substance put on his gloves.

Yes,he wanted to quit and was paranoid that someone was going to try to put something in his water bottles even before the fight started.He had his brother throw out all the water in his water bottles and re tape them many times.Every time his brother did not keep close attention looking after the water bottles,Ali would have him throw away the water and fill them up and re tape them.

Ali even thought Angelo Dundee might have put something in the water.He was that paranoid.Then when Dundee sponged his face and the substance got into his eyes,he thought someone(Even maybe Dundee) put something in his water.Then when he could not see he wanted the fight stopped,and to show everybody that foul play was taking place.Ali said:Why would i want to stop fighting? I'm winning the fight easy!! But he wanted to show foul play was taking place.

Anyway,he wanted to quit but Dundee pushed him out of the corner into mid ring and said:Run! Actually this adds to Ali's greatness.How many fighters could fight a round half blind against Sonny Liston?

Oh,the way Ali got the substance in his eyes was the substance was on Liston's shoulder,and got on Ali's forhead.When Dundee sponged Ali's face and forhead the substance ran down into his eyes.Did Liston also have some of the substance on his gloves? I don't know,but i wouldn't be surprized.

I can't remember where I read it, but it was said that Cleveland Williams also claimed to have gotten some kind of irritant in his eyes against Liston. Whether this is true or not I don't know. But if it is it's at least a possibility Liston was aware of what this substance could do to another fighter leading up to the Ali fight.
