He was voted as the Greatest Boxer of the 1st half Century. Also, Joe Louis stated that he was the Greatest.

With all due respect, I disagree :-)

Lets see, do I go with the opinions of Louis and all the boxing experts of the 1st half century, or do I go with you? Dempsey was rated by most of the boxing Historians and experts as the #1 heavyweight up to the mid-1960's.

You don't have to agree with me and I'm not asking you to. But Louis 20 plus title defenses trump anything Dempsey ever did. And I don't care how the historians saw this. That's just the way I see it.

I am not saying that he was Greater then Louis or Ali, BUT I am saying that he was an all-time Great. I talked to many people that saw him box, including Ray Arcel, and they all say the same thing.

That had more to do with Louis being recently retired than anything else. Heck Ali was rated like 10th during the mid 70s when he'd already done his best work.

You can't make an argument for Dempsey over Louis or Ali, but you certainly can for top 10 ATG, a list that he seems to be absent from these days.

I agree that he's an all time great and I've said this myself. Just watching the very little tape there is on Demspsey shows that he was a highly skilled heavyweight. But I do think he is being overrated by historians that put him at number 1.That's my only issue with Dempsey. Mainly because of his inactivity as a champion.

I would put him in the top 10. Leaving him out would underrate him so I agree with that.

Can't see Dempsey over Louis myself and I would fancy that Jack Johnson might have beat him.
Certainly top ten HW though and far more skilled than he is given credit for nowadays
