I don't think it's overly shocking to have a few guys above Ali. You could make a case for quite a few fighters to be above him. Greb, Pep, Leonard, Armstrong etc.

It's not as if he is head and shoulders above these guys and when you compare their records it's not at all impossible to say that there have been a number of fighters with greater records and more wins against great fighters. Maybe it's because it's the heavyweights that he gets a bit more love and maybe it's because he was also so charismatic, but his wins are still not so much greater than other fighters that they should not even be compared with him.

It's not that far fetched, and in fact, I don't think it's far fetched at all. He fought in an incredible era, but so did most of the other guys and some of them have arguably better win/loss records against as good, or better competition, in those eras than he did in his.

i think pep had more raw physical ability and was a more technical fighter, but as far as legacy i have ali higher.

I try not to rate fighters while they're still active, but out of curiosity, where do you rank Roy Jones Jr?

Not sure about the physical ability, but Pep was definitely more technical.

Greatness though, includes impact on the sport, and Ali has that in abundance.

Sugar does have a tendency to overrate much older fighters. Dempsey, for example. Though at least in this instance, both are generally considered top 10.
