  • Fighters who took severe beatings, but won

Who were some fighters who took some severe beatings only to come back and win their fights?

Was there ever a fighter who collapsed after he won a fight from a blood clot?

Brewster was destroyed by Wlad, but gutted out a win.

Margarito was never hurt by Cotto, but surely had his career shortened by Cotto's assault.

Chavez likewise didn't get hurt by Meldrick but was largely bludgeoned pillar to post for 9 of 12 rounds before scoring a victory.

Not sure if this meats the criteria of your question but those fights came to mind first.

If I remember correctly, Chris Eubank was getting beat pretty bad before getting the KO in Watson II

This fight was specifically on my mind when I made this thread. Only difference is I was thinking if Mel had won, had any other fighter gotten beaten up like that to win. He was clearly winning on points, but he was clearly getting his ass kicked in the process.

            Good one.

As for my second question.......Joe Mesi beat Vasilly Jirov while suffering a blood clot. Any others?

Makes you wonder if Watson had not suffered a brain injury during that fight if he would have gone on to have won. As you stated, he was clearly ahead.

The first fight to come to mind was Bowe against Golota. What a moron/choke artist/headcase Golota was.

Frazier and Ali after third first and third fights. Frazier's face was all busted up after the FOTC, and he almost died from blood pressure problems. I can't imagine how badly Ali's body must've felt after the fight in Manila.

Corrales against Castillo. I remember Chico saying a few days later than he didn't watch the fight for awhile because he was so high on pain-killers, and that he needed his wife to bathe him. That "pain for love" tattoo he had was appropriate, he put himself through hell in that fight.

Archie Moore got knocked down 4 times against Yvon Durelle and won. That's one of the greatest fights ever IMO.

David Izon was getting the hell beaten out of him by Derrick Jefferson. I mean it was so bad that even Larry Merchant was calling for a stoppage. Suddenly, Jefferson runs out of gas, and Izon stops him.

Frazier won FOTC but was nearly beaten to death, his head was nearly twice its normal size and his body was black & blue, Frazier had to be lifted into a bath of ice-cubes by 4 guys `3hrs in the tub 3hrs out`for 48hrs, he then lapsed into a coma for 7 days and spent a month in the hospital due to severely high blood pressure.. more punches was thrown in FOTC than any other fight in boxing history... Smokin Joe Frazier was a true ATG and real tough-guy.
