    Overrated Defnsive Fighters?

Name me some fighters, who you feel have a overrated defence.

Right now I would say Sergio Martinez.

Having said that, I think it's only slightly overrated. He's a good boxer with good footwork and upper body movement and he deserves most of the credit he receives. I just feel that he's easier to hit than people seem to think. I thought that Williams deserved the decision and had an easier job timing and landing punches than he did against Quintana (I know Paul has improved since that defeat, but I don't think that alone explains why he had a harder time with CQ)

A lot of the time "fast" fighters are mistaken for slick defensive fighters. The likes of Meldrick Taylor and Andre Berto actually have fairly poor defense fundamentally although they can get away with a lot.

Yeah. But to be honest, I've never heard no one comment on Meldrick Taylor having a good defence. He was always pretty easy to hit, especailly at Championship level.

I think that for the casual fan Meldrick Taylor would represent the "slick", fast boxer while Chavez was the granite-jawed pressure fighters who walked through punishment. Of course Chavez did do exactly that but fundamentally he was a better defensive fighter than Taylor.

Fast, but not a good defensive fighter. Being fast and defensive are two whole different things.

Meldrick was always there to be hit, espcailly at championship level. Who eve these fans are, need to start watching his fights a bit more.

I sure don't know about the ''slick'' tag for either. Pernell Whitaker was slick, Miguel Canto was slick, Willie Pep was slick.

Meldrick Taylor was ultra fast, with blinding hand and foot speed. But he shound't be mistaked for being a good defensive fighter or being a slick fighter.

Which is the point I'm trying to make. No one here thinks that Meldrick Taylor was good defensively but it's something that I've come across many times, the notion that the "fast" and athletic fighter is automatically a better defensive fighter than the "slow" and aggressive fighter. This is far from the truth of course.

Pernell Whitaker. Most who claim he was this great defensive fighter have only seen some silly highlights of him doing the dipsy doo da.He wasn's this consistently great defensive fighter that they say he was.

Roy Jones was a greater defensive fighter than Pernell Whitaker.Just go watch Pernell Whiaker's fights outside of the flawless clinics he put on against Ramirez,Haugen,Pineda and Chavez.
