  • Robinson and Murderer's Row

How did Ray get away with it? Why did Ray get away with it? Why did Ray do it? Hard to imagine outside forces being responsible, but maybe. Ray was known for controlling his own career. Could he have fought anyone he wanted? Just what are the excuses for Ray?

Sugar Robinson outright jeeted on a Charley Burley fight

a prizefighter in the truest sense of the term the Mayweather of his era

they took fights that had a good risk reward ratio

Sugar Robinson personally found fighting distasteful

he was the greatest fighter but not a fan per those who knew him

Which of the Murderers Row were ranked when he was ranked /champion?
      At Welter?

1941Ray entered the welter ratings at no1 .Wilson was no2, Burley no5, Williams no6, Cocoa Kid no7
What other years were they in the same weight class? Ray weighing under 140lbs beat no 1 Zivic.

At Middle? Which of the Row were ranked when he was?

I know Burley and Williams both fought at middleweight. I don't know their ranking at that time.

I know there is always the money thing to consider. But Ray, unlike many, was making big money. He could have fought Burley. But I guess it was too much risk. But that is called ducking, isn't it.

            - - Burley poison at the gate with a stinker style. Ray was consistently fighting ring ranked fighters the public wanted to see.

Burley entered the middleweight ratings at no2 and Williams no3 in1942 ,unfortunately Tony Zale's title was frozen because of the War,both continued to be ranked up to 45, then Williams dropped out Burley was ranked in 46 and then he dropped out, retiring in1950.
Robinson did not enter the middleweight ratings until1949.So there was no real overlap.

                Good deal.

Burley fought 31 in 98 times against opposition good enough to have a Wiki-pedia link. Robinson fought 67 in 201 fights.

                31/98=32%
                67/301=33%

SRR had nothing to gain from fighting Burley. He wins it becomes a 'so what, we expected that' -- he loses he gives up his #1 ranking.

Then you add to it that, that SRR is the entire gate with Burley bringing almost nothing to the table, so then you have to ask why bother.

                  Legacy is over rated!

P.S. Maybe the black racists The Poet and his puppy Little Joey can come up with an excuse. Oh damn, both fighters are black. I guess they'll have to blame Dempsey.
