Okay, I'll do the job
Super different from victorian era boxing but I still think modern guys have a chance
We spar in all combat sports these days
Sparring for training doesn't take off until about the 1840s.
Prior it was believed a man would dull his instincts by fighting too often. That's why their records pre 30s are so short.
Likewise, we really don't know that much about these men. I've seen people write beautifully about Figg, who never claimed to be the best boxer in England nor is there much evidence he was a boxer. Or Broughton, whose house rules have become staple rules for all of England despite very much being for his venue.
Fact is the current narrative on early english boxing is dominated by Egan. Egan isn't a bad writer perse but he did retrofit and post date quite a lot. Fair play to him, he did not plagiarize
If you are interested in the early lads and how they went from stage gladiators to boxers you should look for John Godfrey's treatise upon a useful defense.
In that book he lists the boxers of the day, Godfrey, unlike Egan, is alive and member of the fancy during this era. You'll not see Figg mentioned there.
You will see Broughton but not as champion but rather captain.
Champion as a term doesn't enter the common vernacular for best in boxing until the later 18th and start of the 19th century.
As in no man during his era called Broughton or Figg champion of england.
Later we see the same situation with so-called historians like Nat Fleischer retrofitting what is present, for him, over what was before.
Without intrepid investigators to review this work until the late 90s and bold corrections not coming until the mid 2000s, often, fans deny the process and cite lofty names such as Nat and Pierce to supplement their own lack of investigation or earnest interest.
So, should I speak frankly, off the cuff, and casually without a full battery of books, papers, and magazines ready to back each claim all I am really doing is inviting argument that will not be resolved.
So, it depends on who you ask. None here will call Robert Delaney champion in 1864 despite being called best in England. All here will call Broughton champion despite him never having been called champion in his time.
We still argue over the who's let alone the practices.
That said, there is more to modern training than history fans like to admit, and, that's a really sharp distinction during any BK era. Sparring alone ought to set the BK era in its place but no matter what i claim I am sure someone will argue with it.
the "we"s here are meant to refer to fanbase, not me as an individual. I can talk heaps about BK all you like bro.Willow The Wisp

Imagine an American President telling ghe people, in an election year, "You have to expect less, we can't afford this lifestyle."
Reagan tore Carter a new a- hole with that one and beat the quip to death.
His quips made him America's darling.
He had 'daddy's' credit card (our economy) and cut taxes and raised spending. Every year the deficit got bigger.
Reagan said, don't worry about it I got a plan.
He pleased everyone. Won 49 of 50 States in relection. And then . . .
He tripled the National debt from one trillion to 3.3 trillion and we have never looked back.
30 trillion and counting.
We did have a chance back in 1980. We could have reelected Grandpa Carter or we could have a blast with Ronnie the Popular.
His quips were so good he even has you using one today.
We chose Reagan and The 80s! "Greed is good."
Great quips but one hell of a bad President.Last edited by Willie Pep 229; 05-22-2025, 02:37 PM.
