3 categories of fighters below:
Mike Weaver Corrie Sanders Jerry Quarry
Cat Williams Vitalie Klitsko Rid**** Bowe
Tommy Morrison Sonny Liston Razor Ruddock
The first category are fighters that to me show a special fluidity characteristic of elite punchers, true punchers... Like Dempsey and Louis.
The second category are fighters I believe might qualify but I am not sure I see it as well developed in the capacity to be discussed. The third category are talented fighters who were brawlers and had skills but could not be mistaken for being a classic puncher in the same sense.
These categories are not meant to be exhaustive, just to show some examples, I tried when possible to use less heralded fighters, with the exception of Liston because Sonny could easily be mistaken for either other category.
The quality has to do with a characteristic fluidity, a natural delivery with no hesitation no wind up, and excellent placement skills. More to the point, see if you can recognize a quality that shows a true natural puncher. I cannot put my finger on exactly what the quality is... Only that I see it when I see it. There is a natural speed and little to no build up to the shots. Also a peculiar idiocyncracy I noticed... Watch Louis, Williams and Weaver and look how they often hold their gloves upwards like they are being sworn into a legal pleading... Just something I noticed lol.
I also believe that many great hitters are not particularly successful. The game is more and more rigged in favor of the boxer, the ma who can score, win rounds... Which is why I agree with Pep that damage should be a major scoring criteria for professional prize fighting.
