    - - Mercer had tubby Lar completely choked out with his right before tossing him across the ring like a raggedy doll into the far corner gasping for his venal life.

Great matchup wow. I think Mercer stops Shavers late. I think Mercer had better skill and chin. I feel Shavers is overrated in head to head matchups because of his power.

Everyone here takes orders from the Queen B: We wait until his gin soaked brain is able to tell us what conspiracy was responsible for why Valuev is not the best, Wilt never got a chance to beat Ali, Holmes only won the fight with Cooney because Cooney did not fight Weaver, etc. According to the Queen B the Earth is so flat that when Dolly Parton is approached lying down from a distance, people think they are arriving at the magical mountain kingdom of Shangri la.

Someone has to give a nod to the Acorn. Shavers was very tough. Mercer had alot on the ball and was more technically sound that Shavers but its hard to say if Mercer fought someone with that power... Didn't he fight Briggs? When Brigg's could fight? Brigg's KO'ed him.

I will just say that Shavers hit harder than Brigg's by a country mile. Shavers scared a lot of more technical fighters with his power. Shavers also beat Young who was perhaps the most underated heavyweight, along with Liston of all times...

I think Ernie takes Mercer. Mercer was not better than Young... Shavers also gave Holmes problems. People say that Cobb withstood, well... Cobb had elite chin status, probably better chin than Mercer.

Note: Not using triangle theory, just saying stylistically boxer punchers: Young versus Mercer... Young was imo much much better.

Great points. Some solid reasoning on both side of the fence in this thread.

                  - - Mercer was a thug with Olympic Gold Medal credentials, so he never reached his pro potentials. I used the Tubby Lar comparison to note he lost a political decision to Lar in spite of almost killing him and otherwise mugging him instead of boxing.

Don't like Mercer but very fond of Shavers who should've won by stoppage his Ali fight that put Ali's health in a permanent decline. He beat the holy ding dongs out of Ali even worse than Frazier, Foreman, and Wepner did.

Shavers beat up Norton also, he reminds me of the words Glencoff Johnson, a fighter who was also excellent and lost some bad decisions, used to describe himself, "I am not the best, I am the one who beats the best."

Political decision? Is this another one of your conspiracy theories? Mercer got outfought, just like he did against Ferguson.
