I guarantee that a not insignificant percentage of people here have done similar backyard training. I know I did. I once had a poster of Ray Robinson on my bedroom wall, taken from some boxing magazine's centerfold. Robinson's signature was beneath it. I added, "Good luck on your way to the championship, kid."

In high school a kid wanted to fight me over an erroneous grudge. The PE instructor had seen some of this encounter, and proposed we put on the gloves during PE class. Even though this kid was a pretty fair street fighter, he was such easy work with the gloves on, I felt sorry for him and took it easy. I had a street fight with a kid who was a monster street fighter. We had a fight in the theater parking lot, he was beating my ass, because he was an all-state wrestler, but the fight was broken up before the job was finished.

The next day a PE instructor suggested the gloves again, but the wrestler refused because he had already seen how easily I had handled the other guy. He knew his only advantage was on the ground because I was not a wrestler--I always hated wrestling when we were sometimes forced to do it in PE class.

So a little boxing training goes a long way when boxing civilians.

I heard about boxing in PE class, that would have been great.

Reading through this thread, I wonder if there is anything modern boxers can do right!

I have never argued in favour of today's boxers being better than the old-timers... I'm arguing against them being complete trash, as you will have us believe.

Yes, I saw how bad Fury looked against Ngannou. And yes, that was indeed embarrassing. What does such a fight tell us about modern boxing as a whole? Nothing really!

Another Leonard comes to mind. Ray might be thought of as a mover and dancer, but he was in fact brilliant at parrying and blocking punches. It became more evident late in his career.

              Liability!

When I was in the 5th grade we had a trampoline in PE class.

A kid fell and broke a small bone in his neck. Big scare no premant damage. Trampoline disappeared and we noticed it.

Seven years later we're drinking some beers when someone brings up the old trampoline.

We go down to the local elementary school and ask what they did with it. The custodian said it was locked in a closet. The principal said take it, no charge.

We had a top quality trampoline in our backyard to play with.

Boxing went the way of the trampoline, liability.

By the mid sixties no school district wanted to touch the concept.

Boxing used to be mandatory at Ivory league schools like Harvard.

                - - Long time herniated disc used to render me greatly maligned for a couple of day before subsiding flared up in the middle of the night leaving me rolling around paralyzed in pain for a several hours until I could finally move to down expired Tylenol so could finally loosen up empty my exploding bladder.

Couple days later I walked to the edge of my front curb before returning for a rest of my back. I've never fully recovered that resulted in a massive weight gain once I lost my hard won high metabolism. Slowly melting it with intermittent fasting, steady walking, intermittent weight lifting and reduced diet, but I reckon I'm still 20lb over my former fight ready conditioning.

An old boxer lived in our town. He gave me pointers. It was not actual training--my parents didn't want that; they foolishly had other plans for my head. I was too young for him officially but he was like tickled and willing to answer questions. I was probably 11. But I practiced in a mirror that was for no reason in the loft of our barn. I bought a speed bag. I can still work it a little bit, when I can hold my arms up.

They didn't have the kids box in PE class anymore. They had used to though, and still had the equipment.

Not setting myself up as some kind of boxer. You have my official boxing credentials above, other than barnyard matches and occasional visits back to my mentor until I was about 16. The point is though (I guess) that any experience and effort at all (in anything), puts you at a disproportionate advantage over an equal with none.

One didn't train, the other trained too much to make weight
