I believe Dempsey's interest in boxing was waning well before the first Tunney fight. He came off a three year layoff and was never the same. He was making so much money doing exhibitions, movies, theater, personal appearances, etc., that required zero risk. The good life caught up to him and it's hard for a fighter to remain hungry once he became the wealthiest athlete in the world. I have to go back and check his bio to see exactly what he said about his decision to retire.

Going off task on my own thread but I wonder if Greb's death (being boxing related) affected the prevailing temperament towards fighters' well being.

I suspect there wasn't and out cry like there was after Benny Paret, Davey Moore, or Kim Duck-koo.

Past generations accepted risk (and possible death) differently than we do today. I feel as though World War II redefined our feelings towards death, particularly unecessary ones.

I've always read that is was Dempsey who refused a third fight whenever Rickard suggested it.If the fights had been longer than 10 rds its possible Tunney may have stopped Jack.

So the first fight Tunney won easily and the second I've seen it printed that Dempsey won ONE round.

I'm pretty convinced that Tunney rises from that knockdown at a count of 9 no matter when the ref begins counting. Then the fight goes the same exact way.
