  • On Gene Tunney

Half way through his book. Gene Tunney was one if the most unique figures in boxing that I have ever read about. A literal nerd of his day, not from a terrible background but wasn’t rich. Joins the military which hardens him up and he get’s more serious about boxing after the fact.

figures out how to beat everyone with his high IQ, then leaves boxing like he never did it. There has never been anyone like him before or after. Lived another full life after he left boxing.

also, outside of the knock down Tunney more than just beat Dempsey, he actually schooled him for most of the fight - but it’s not a flashy schooling. It is however, a lot more one sided than one would think.

also it’s important to note that while Greb really beat Tunney up the first time, by the last time Greb was the one being beat up - probably due to a lot of factors. Tunney showed his ability to adjust even when he first laced up the gloves. After getting beat up, he went home and constantly thought about what he needed to do to not let that happen.

Great fighter but I didn't like him drawing the color line. I wouldn't be surprised if he was an outright racist, though that has nothing to do with his boxing acumen.

There is a photo of him at a diner table with Joe Louis. Not that it proves anything.Tommy Loughran was another Irish American fighter who never fought a black man. After the discrimination the Irish had endured ,you would have thought they would have been more sympatico to the Blacks.

          - - OP blithering again.

Close 2 fights by available truncated footage save the Dempsey KO denied Jack when he gave Tunney a 14 count.

crazy thing is some of the baddest mfker weren’t actually racist. Take Marciano for example. Mind you everyone would be considered racist today - but they didn’t think lesser of blacks. Even Marciano's own friends pointed it out
