As far as I am aware... and if you can catch up with Margiano, he knows a lot more... these contests were held informally/formally: Let me explain... As a kid growing up in East Harlem, I might decide to fight some Puerto Rican kid... we could just go, and sometimes we would sgree to meet at the schoolyard. There was a procession to this event. People showed up, made a circle, we duked it out and that was generally that.

So, these poor families had small houses grouped together in the rural south, from ******ia and in land through to parts of Appalachia, while more middle class families had some land and a house. The fights took place like the schoolyard brawl. In a location known to all, and there was a certain procession. These fights could escalate into viscious brew hahas lol. And occasionally men of means did engage. I wouldn't call them a sporting event, and the crowds were informal... But these were not generally spontaneous fights.

My own feeling is that a lot of the method socially was designed for very hard living men who had a thing for the Bible, ala old Testament: You had to build up a pretty good level of resentment to maim another so deliberately. The Old Testament legal system held sway "an eye for an eye" you make my neighbor stink eye me (dishonor), I take your eye.

Hardly different from a planned street fight. Way back in my high school days, two students decided to fight it out in the graveyard after school. Both were tough. A big tough guy and a little tough guy. Well, half the school was there. When they were ready they put up their dukes. The little guy immediately kicked him in the nuts, and the fight was over. In those days kicking was considered dirty or girlish fighting. Other tough guys wanted to take him out, but nothing happened. Everybody went home.

yeah that is the basic idea. There is always a designated spot for these things lol.

Saw it live closed circuit. The atmosphere in the auditorium was like nothing I have seen. Remember one Leonard fan saying that Leonard is just trying to prove he can take Durans best shots like that was a good strategy or something.

Thanks. Still following the sport and watching the fights, just not finding a lot of stuff I feel the need or want to comment on in a while. I have to remind myself that’s there is a lot interesting takes and comments on this forum though. Sometimes there’s some pure gold.

Would have been gold to be ringside with Beast at Gatti-Ward 1

Thanks. There’s nothing like a live fight atmosphere. I was in a dusty bull ring in Cancun city and saw Jorge Linares in a great fight win with a spectacular KO and Edwin Valero fight also. Don King and Lou DiBella were there. Place was surrounded by federalies in riot gear m16’s and german sheppards.
I got to sit next to Rodger The Dodger Leonard at a fight. Friendly, likeable, really added to the experience. Let me try on one of Sugar Rays championship rings.
Id have loved to have seen any of the Gatti Wards live! Even the sports I don’t follow have been great to see in person. The Vasquez vs Marquez fights would have been insane too live, though I think it can take a lot out of you.
Watching the latest Munguia vs Dev. fight was crazy from the opening bell. Morales was my favourite fighter so I cheer hard for Jaime. I was exhausted by the end of that fight.
