  • Environs of Destitution

Boxing has myriad stories of once known or even great boxers gone destitute. Submit boxers, if you will, who belong on the list, from Sam Langford to Leon Spinks. I know there are a bunch, but I can only identify a few. So who was once riding high but went destitute after or during their career? Give some details if you can.

Joe Louis is the first to come to mind. Rocky Lockridge was out on the streets homeless and addicted to crack after his career was over. I think Iran Barkley was homeless for awhile after boxing. There are a ton of fighters who have went bankrupt.

You very often come from the lowest rung on the socioeconomic ladder. You make 90% of all the money you're ever going to make before you're in your mid 30s, you forego trade training in pursuit of your craft, you have new friends with ideas that are bad for you and old friends with even worse ideas, you take damage like a fireproofer spraying asbestos, you retire before you know it, and it's over. There's no league or team to treat you like a hothouse flower and make you go to bed on time.
      Is it any wonder?

I think Aaron Pryor goes on the list, doesn't he?
