On this day in 1967, boxing legend
Muhammad Ali was given a prison
sentence for refusing to serve in
the Vietnam War. He was sentenced
to five years behind bars and fined
    10,000 dollars, an unusually harsh
sentence in an attempt to break his
    anti-war resistance.

$87,448 in today's money. The five years and the legal fees mattered more. The loss of his Prime Years mattered the most. But stepping way beyond the Wayne Gretzky, Michael Jordan, Pele, Pete Sampras level of sports icon to become one of Life ****zine's "100 most important people in History" by calling attention to the fact that war is not always the best solution to division....more important than anything, perhaps.

Ali was always a great man, but he went on to become a great humanitarian. The definition of "icon" should have his picture next to it.

        - - And because of Ali personal resources and access to the best legal minds in America, he never spent a day behind bars over the incident whereas uncounted thousands were drafted, maimed, and killed, ie conscripted into the unholy Vietnam disaster...Yer welcome...

He didn't know he wasn't going to prison and he still held his ground. That's called standing by your principles. It's called integrity. Both which you know nothing about.

GOD BLESS Muhammad Ali and everything he has done for mankind.

            - - He quit the misbegotten sect that kidnapped him is the only thing he was doing for humanity.

MLK and his corp of civil rights leaders were the generals for the righteousness that needed to be accomplished.

I liked Ali as the big brother getting to do things I could never do. End of the day the American system he savaged saved him that made him a hero while uncountable heroes died in that political war to no acclaim by hapless oafs like you..

Any of those,."maimed, killed," not give the same opportunity to refuse to take that step forward to take the enlistment procedure?

He didn't savage the American system, he navigated it through righteousness and integrity, blazing a trail that will not soon be forgotten. You only wish you have that kind of perseverance, integrity, and be a fraction of the man Ali was. Instead, you're just a drunk trolling the internet.

they told him he would never see combat. Just like Joe Louis. that wasn't the point. his teacher Elijah Muhammad said NOI members don't serve in combat. In fact, his teacher W.F. Muhammad would not allow Elijah to serve in WW2 and when to prison for it. LBJ should have been the one to go to prison. For starting a war on a lie and murdering JFK.
