  • Guesstimating Langford's Punch

Langford's punching power, though only hearsay, at least is the hearsay of other great fighters.

Which fighter that you know better matches Langford in power most closely? I will supply three grades of power: G, for greater than Langford's, L, for Less than Langford's, and S, for the same as Langford's. Of course S is not exact and means two fighters' power punch is in the same neighborhood. Make your own markings. How right or how wrong am I?

    Tunney L
    Dempsey G
    Sharkey L
    Braddock L
    Baer G
    Louis G
    Walcott S
    Charles L
    Marciano S
    Patterson S
    Liston G
    Ali S
    B Foster S
    M Spinks S
    V Klit S
    W Klit S
    Wilder G
    Fury G

There was a fighter that fought both Dempsey and Langford, and he said Langford was easily the harder puncher, if I remember correctly. I think it was Gunboat Smith.

Any idea why the guy was called Gunboat? Was he as big as one or did he hit like one?

Well he had joined the US Navy and that's where he began boxing. Won the Heavyweight Championship of the Pacific Fleet apparently, so it probably came from that.

Which one? I actually got that line from the main character of the TV show Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

Also the cops on South Park keep creepily saying "NICE" when Kyle tells them his brother Ike is having *** with his teacher because they all think the teacher is hot so I use one of those GIFs in chats too sometimes

Right, a novice Gunboat Smith knocked Johnson down, and made him see stars. Johnson's manger halted the match 4 round exibition match to save him from further punishment. Johnson was at his best in 1909. Smith never got a title shot.

Article headline says Johnson was knocked out.
