Well, he did beat the great John L. fought Peter Jackson who Sullvan wanted no part of. Has wins over Choynski and Kilrain. Corbett loss to Jeffries because he wore himself out pounding big Jim for 23 one sided rounds. Corbett was a good fighter. Corbett is not overrated because no one rates him high anyway.

Sullivan was 34 and had not fought for nearly 5 years.
The Choynski win was when both were nobodies.
Kilrain was way out of shape , and no infighting was allowed , so all the odds were in Corbett's favour.

No one rates him high because what "no one" doesn't know about boxing history could fill a message board!

        But here's my take....
In the later years of the 19th century spilling over into the next, in that time when modern mechanization was present but modern conveniences of later-on where comparatively not, the entire world was full of really tough sailors, farmers, lumbermen, builders, street bullies, soldiers, factory workers, saloon brawlers, cowbows, desperados and such who were just getting by, and regardless of where they were living; most of them knew who James J. Corbett was, and would gladly swap places with him if only they had what it took to accomplish that.
Boxing is not some exclusive club where only the invited get to participate. Everyone on earth looking to elevate their standing is welcome to train and put themselves in the running to get to where Corbett got to.

For what that position actually was, for your edification, I'm posting this again:

These people are so delusional these people act like logic doesn't apply to Rocky Marciano. They will tell you since. Mike Tyson, George Foreman, Lennox Lewis, Wladimir Klitschko ect were beat by modern sized heavyweights then that means 180 pound Rocky Marciano could do the same. They will tell you sized doesn't matter in boxing but yet there are weight classes and if you ask them then could Floyd Mayweather beat Marciano they will say no because Mayweather is too small. So size only doesn't matter when it benefits their point.

Marciano fanboys are so delusional that they can't grasp that even if you want to say Marciano was a hard puncher for 180 pounds ( He wasn't and I will get to that in a second). How does that equate to him being a hard puncher compared to 200 plus pound heavyweights? It is like saying since Julian Jackson punched harder for 155-160 that means Jackson could knock out Deontay Wilder.

Marciano wasn't even good for 180 pound standards. Marciano was lucky to fight in a era where the Mafia controlled boxing and staged his fights and hand picked his opponents. His KO percentage is a product of that. It is like saying since Tye Fields and David Rodriguez had high KO percentages then it must of meant they punched hard. No Tye Fields and Rodriguez didn't fight anybody and neither did Marciano (Besides old glass chin, Joe Louis, Jersey Joe Walcott, Archie Moore and faded Ezzard Charles).

The only other boxing fans who are this delusional are Tyson Fury, Wladimir Klistchko and Mike Tyson fans. But at least this guys were heavyweights so you can compare them to heavyweights.
Same way as people say Floyd Patterson was a gentleman or Joe Louis was the greatest heavyweight ever...
