Yea that's what bothered me about the Cobb fight. Certainly it is paradoxical but sometimes taking an opponent out early does the weaker opponent a favor long term. One bad concussion (KO) will do less damage than a 15 round beating.

It believe that's why Howard Cosell stopped calling fights. As big of a blow hard as he could be, he knew that damage that could be done long term and was livid the fight wasn't stopped.

Yea he stopped announcing the fight around the 11th round or something like that. If you watch the reply you should hear only silence for the last few rounds.

Here's the thing though -- someone on here or maybe the Boxrec forum claimed that the network told him they were not going to renew his contract, so he used protesting the fight (by refusing to 'call it') as a way to quit on air. You know, he quit before they could fire him, and did it before the entire nation.

Except I don't know if that is true or not. I do know he quit boxing that night and that was OK and not OK for different reasons.

I don't believe this is true. Holmes vs Cobb was televised by ABC in 1982. Cosell was still with the network calling Monday night football until September of 1985 when he memoir came out and he was subsequently released. I think Cosell was just truly disgusted by the sport at that point. He had a front row seat for Ali's fall from grace and the direct effects of to much punishment taken.

That was pretty much the end for Cosell's passion with the sport

                - - I'd guess Tex would be too bluntly truthful to call fights as he sees them.

Otherwise, unleashing him on the air would likely shame much of what goes on in a fight as well as smarmy announcers since he has always been quick with a quip needed for any situation. Under his watch, fighters would be forced to fight better with the ref forced to fairly officiate, and no doubt the audience for boxing would grow because he would put boxing into terms the average person could understand.

Right now, average Joe tunes in and can't reconcile what is going on in the ring with what the announcers are preening themselves with.
