Yeah, one of the more "exotic" old-timer stories: that one (or several) of Sharkey's broken ribs were sticking out through the skin, in his fight with Jeffries... but that he was so courageous, that he ignored the pain and finished the fight! Obviously a made up story, to illustrate how almost inhumanly tough he was.

Sharkey did have broken ribs and he broke a finger and dislocated his arm the sticking through the skin bit
is, as you say just an embellishment.

What does Sammons say:

How many doctors involved?

What was their verdict ?

Did ghe judge (at first) give Fitzsimmons the junction he sought ?

These are the three things (I remember being) different in the book from the animation.

According to Jeffrey Sammons in, Beyond the Ring, the day after the fight Sharkey was examined by a team of six doctors, three chosen by Sharkey and three chosen by Fitzsimmons' people. The doctors unanimously agreed that Sharkey had been ruptured by the low blow. It was then that the judge voided the injuction holding back the purse.

Earp, who, on the same next day, was attacked by a local newspaper for creating the fix. (The newspaper owner had bet heavy on Fitz) He called Earp corrupt. (By other historical accounts, Earp was corrupt.)

After the doctors decision Earp insisted the newspaper retract its statement or face a defamination suit. The newspaper retracted the accusations.

I wonder why this video offers a different story.

Brings the two stories to a reasonable compromise - lots of doctors only some getting to see.

Would you inject your balls for 10K (100K today) and then put leaches on them to fool doctors?

- - OK, needless to say the Fitz groin shot was not seen by all, hence the controversy, but Sharkey was carried unconscious to a dressing area to be examined by a phalanx of Docs who pronounced groin damage.

Fitz manager filed an injunction on the purse pending examination by another phalanx of selected Docs that was heavily backed by the local rag who lost $20K on a Fitz win. Some things never change

Net result was new Docs established the Sharkey "genital trauma."

Sharky got his winners purse, and Earp next showed as leader of the guns in the corner of Corbett in March of 1897 against Fitz that kicked off what is known as today as corrupted Hollywood with their first international blockbuster full length feature film featuring a bitter Ben Hur rivalry between the slick, fleet footed, quick fisted, loose lipped dandy of Corbett and the quiet hard working slugger of Fitz long before Ali and Frazier became an item.

Little known that in 2010 I wrote an open letter to the National Film Registry basically shaming them for not putting this fight up for historical preservation. I emailed a copy to boxing senators John McCain and Harry Reid.

That sparked a lot of Wiki interest and edits in that fight account, and inside a year later it was placed in their preservation registry.

About 2 decades too late, but better late than never...only in boxing, folks!

There is a lot of testimony from Sharkey camp followers that it was a put up job .I've no idea if any of the accusations are true.
One thing that does stick in my mind is the fact that the Sharkey camp vetoed every referee proposed and insisted on novice Wyatt Earp. Why would do that? Especially as Sharkey was known as a rough fighter inclined to bend the rules?
Also ,if Sharkey was legitimately fouled why would his corner men not allow the official Doctor in to examine him?
Fitz had a comfortable lead in their fight,why would he need to resort to fouling?
To me at least it doesn't add up.

I'm pretty sure Sammons gives the name of the newspaper owner when mentioning the law suit.

I wasn't aware of a referee dispute. Thought Earp merely a Celebrity referee. A different source has Earp being the choice of the Club itself.

Your above posts has three different doctors saying yes and one Doctor, the Club doctor who was barred from the dressing room, saying no.

If it's a conspiracy Sharkey and Earp were able to corrupt three doctors (unless you buy into the testicle injection fraud). It is interesting that the Club doctor didn't acuse the other doctors of fraud but instead argued they were duped. Either way he probably didn't make too many friends among his colleagues.

I am not sure what Queen means by a "phalanx" of doctors. But I assume he means many.

What motive Sharkey may have had for refusing the Club doctor I wouldn't try to say; swelling does tend to reach its peak about 12 hours after the injury.

It was reported that Sharkey "fainted" from the blow. Not a usual reaction for someone taking a hard solar plexus punch.

Corbett, Graciano and 'Devil' Green (Patterson fight) all had their legs collapse from under them and grimaced as they clutched their midsection trying to regain their feet. They then rather quickly regained their composure and were more angry than hurt.

Sharkey fainted dead away and was carried from the ring. We have ask, did Sharkey actually fake fainting and then played opossum as they carried him from the ring, or did he faint dead away from a body blow? Or was there a KO blow to the jaw?

It was Sharkey's home turf so the opportunity for fraud was there. Actually surprised the local judge, at first, ruled against Sharkey. But finally then came around to his way.

Your source says Sharkey didn't get his money until the 17th. That's 15 days later. What could have held back the judge's decision for 15 days? Most of the accounts suggest the doctor examinations (that did happen) happened the next day or soon after.

P.S. Boxrec quotes the Jeffersonville Evening Journal calling out Earp's decision. I will be interested if you could tell me (when you get the book) what newspaper Sammons mentions in his work.
