The picture of Sharkey at 10 seconds is one I have seen before. This one is a little bit clearer. It strongly suggests that Sharkey had a milking muscle on the inside of his left wrist. Could be a shadow or some other defect. Tom has the right muscularity though. Hauling on ropes might have the same effect as milking cows, if he really ever was a sailor.

According to Jeffrey Sammons in, Beyond the Ring, the day after the fight Sharkey was examined by a team of six doctors, three chosen by Sharkey and three chosen by Fitzsimmons' people. The doctors unanimously agreed that Sharkey had been ruptured by the low blow. It was then that the judge voided the injuction holding back the purse.

Earp, who, on the same next day, was attacked by a local newspaper for creating the fix. (The newspaper owner had bet heavy on Fitz) He called Earp corrupt. (By other historical accounts, Earp was corrupt.)

After the doctors decision Earp insisted the newspaper retract its statement or face a defamination suit. The newspaper retracted the accusations.

I wonder why this video offers a different story.

I suggest you read Pollack's Fitzsimmons book and Sharkey's great grand daughter's one for more detail.

Why are you convinced that Jeffrey T. Sammons is not a good historian?

His work, Beyond the Ring is well documented history.

Maybe you should give it a read.

I'm not, I've never read him! All I can say is I've never read that about 6 doctors before.
I#m happy to give any boxing author a go and grateful for any heads ups about them.
You seem rather defensive mate, put your hands down,I only go after arseholes not regular posters! I'll take a look on Amazon and E Bay for Mr Sammons.Stay Well!
